Nazarene devotees urged to put faith into practice

MANILA, Jan. 10, 2013— After another massive Black Nazarene feast, the head of Quiapo Church has called on Black Nazarene devotees to put their faith into practice.

Msgr. Clemente Ignacio, Quiapo Church rector, encouraged believers to deepen their faith and get to know God better through his teachings and by walking in his footsteps.

“The best we can say is that we encourage our devotees to deepen their faith and have their conviction,” Ignacio said.

Manila Archbishop Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle previously scored “practical atheism” among the faithful.

These, Tagle said, are those Catholics who claim that they believe in God but their actions do not match their words.

In his homily during the Mass prior to the Black Nazarene procession yesterday, Tagle made a similar appeal to the devotees of the dark-skinned Christ.

On Wednesday, an estimated nine million devotees flocked the streets of Manila to join the annual procession in honor of the Black Nazarene.

Authorities said that almost 1,500 individuals were injured in the process during their separate attempts to get near the Black Nazarene image enshrined atop the carriage.
The image was only able to get home to the Quiapo Church at around 1am Thursday, or 18 hours after it left the Quirino Grandstand. (CBCPNews)
