John
Chapter 20

1
1 2 3 On the first day of the week, Mary of Magdala came to the tomb early in the morning, while it was still dark, and saw the stone removed from the tomb.
2
So she ran 4 and went to Simon Peter and to the other disciple whom Jesus loved, and told them, "They have taken the Lord from the tomb, and we don't know where they put him."
3
5 So Peter and the other disciple went out and came to the tomb.
4
They both ran, but the other disciple ran faster than Peter and arrived at the tomb first;
5
he bent down and saw the burial cloths there, but did not go in.
6
When Simon Peter arrived after him, he went into the tomb and saw the burial cloths 6 there,
7
and the cloth that had covered his head, not with the burial cloths but rolled up in a separate place.
8
Then the other disciple also went in, the one who had arrived at the tomb first, and he saw and believed.
9
7 For they did not yet understand the scripture that he had to rise from the dead.
10
Then the disciples returned home.

Acts
Chapter 1

1
1 In the first book, Theophilus, I dealt with all that Jesus did and taught
2
until the day he was taken up, after giving instructions through the holy Spirit to the apostles whom he had chosen.
3
He presented himself alive to them by many proofs after he had suffered, appearing to them during forty days 2 and speaking about the kingdom of God.
4
While meeting with them, he enjoined them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for "the promise of the Father 3 about which you have heard me speak;
5
for John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the holy Spirit."
6
When they had gathered together they asked him, "Lord, are you at this time going 4 to restore the kingdom to Israel?"
7
5 He answered them, "It is not for you to know the times or seasons that the Father has established by his own authority.
8
6 But you will receive power when the holy Spirit comes upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, throughout Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth."
9
When he had said this, as they were looking on, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him from their sight.
10
While they were looking intently at the sky as he was going, suddenly two men dressed in white garments stood beside them.
11
They said, "Men of Galilee, why are you standing there looking at the sky? This Jesus who has been taken up from you into heaven will return in the same way as you have seen him going into heaven."

Luke
Chapter 12

more.
49
10 "I have come to set the earth on fire, and how I wish it were already blazing!
50
11 There is a baptism with which I must be baptized, and how great is my anguish until it is accomplished!
51
Do you think that I have come to establish peace on the earth? No, I tell you, but rather division.
52
From now on a household of five will be divided, three against two and two against three;
53
a father will be divided against his son and a son against his father, a mother against her daughter and a daughter against her mother, a mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law."

Matthew
Chapter 22

34
19 When the Pharisees heard that he had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together,
35
and one of them [a scholar of the law] 20 tested him by asking,
36
"Teacher, 21 which commandment in the law is the greatest?"
37
He said to him, 22 "You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.
38
This is the greatest and the first commandment.
39
The second is like it: 23 You shall love your neighbor as yourself.
40
24 The whole law and the prophets depend on these two commandments."

Matthew
Chapter 24

29
16 "Immediately after the tribulation of those days, the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light, and the stars will fall from the sky, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken.
30
And then the sign of the Son of Man 17 will appear in heaven, and all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming upon the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.
31
And he will send out his angels 18 with a trumpet blast, and they will gather his elect from the four winds, from one end of the heavens to the other.

THE WISDOM BOOKS AND GOSPEL
SIRACH: JOYS AND MISERY OF LIFE

Sirach
Chapter 40

11
3 All that is of earth returns to earth, and what is from above returns above.
12
All that comes from bribes or injustice will be wiped out, but loyalty remains for ages.
13
Wealth out of wickedness is like a wadi in spate: like a mighty stream with lightning and thunder,
14
Which, in its rising, rolls along the stones, but suddenly, once and for all, comes to an end.

17
4 But goodness will never be cut off, and justice endures forever. Wealth or wages can make life sweet, but better than either is finding a treasure.
