Blame economic injustice, not big families – Pope

ROME, Italy, Jan. 22, 2015— Economic injustice — not traditional, large families — is the real cause poverty, Pope Francis said as he clarified his earlier remark on why being Catholic does not mean being “like rabbits.”
“I have heard it said that families with many children and high birth rates are among the causes of poverty. It seems to me a simplistic opinion,” the pontiff said during his weekly general audience in the Paul VI hall at the Vatican on Jan. 21 where he reviewed his recent trip to Sri Lanka and the Philippines.
‘Throwaway culture’
According to the Holy Father, the economic system, which prioritizes profit over the human person is to blame for world poverty and not families that have many children.
“I can say that the main cause of poverty is an economic system that has removed the person from the centre and replaced him with the god of money; an economic system that excludes and creates the throwaway culture in which we live,” Francis explained.
“We have become used to seeing people who have been discarded. This is the main reason for poverty, and not numerous families” he added.
Natural Family Planning
During the news conference aboard the plane returning from a week-long Asia trip on Monday, the Pope restated the Church’s ban on artificial birth control, while clarifying this does not mean Catholics should stop spacing having children or have them without any sense of responsibility.
The Church only allows natural methods of family planning.
“It is necessary to protect families, which face various threats, so that they can bear witness to the beauty of the family in God’s plan,” Pope Francis said.
An unofficial translation of the papal statement during the in-flight press conference reads: “Some think that — excuse the language — that in order to be good Catholics, we have to be like rabbits. No. Responsible parenthood. This is clear and that is why in the Church there are marriage groups, there are experts in this matter, there are pastors, one can search; and I know so many ways that are licit and that have helped this.”
