‘God’s mercy alone saves’—preacher

MANILA, April 17, 2015—Faith saves? Works save? It’s not as simple as that, declared a lay theologian, noting how the salvation of mankind ultimately rests on God’s mercy.

In a recent lecture dedicated to what is often hailed as “God’s greatest attribute,” lawyer-preacher Marwil N. Llasos blasted “Sola Fide” (“Faith Alone”), a doctrine many non-Catholics hold as Gospel truth, pointing out that not even faith can guarantee one’s salvation.

Titus 3:5

Citing Titus 3:5 (NAB), he shared, “Not because of any righteous deeds we had done but because of His Mercy, He saved us through the bath of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit.”

“Sisters and brothers, we are saved through God’s Mercy. Not even our faith can save us, because faith is a human response [deeds]. For you to have faith, God has already been merciful to you, because that is grace,” the consecrated secular told members of the Company of St. Dominic (CSD), April 12, Divine Mercy Sunday.
Llasos went on to explain that even the greatest of saints has no right to claim salvation on the basis of mere faith and works.

Empty-handed

“We have nothing to boast of. When the time comes for us to face our Maker, we are all empty-handed. Nothing we do suffices. We may be among the most selfless of people, the greatest in the world. But you think there’s value, there’s merit in it, if we only rely on our own abilities? No! Shame on us!” he exclaimed .
“But we are thankful that God is merciful. Because of the Father who is loving as a father is merciful, derives satisfaction from the little that we have shared if done with love,” he said.

According to him, if God would only let His justice prevail, then not one of the millions and millions who swear by their faith in Him can come up to His standards.

Humility

Llasos further explained begging for mercy is the absolute act of humility and surrender a faithful can do given that it is an admission that that person has no more cards to play.

“When the time comes, we could only fall on our knees, imploring Him: “Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a poor sinner,’” he added. (Raymond A. Sebastián/CBCP News)
