PH shouldn’t jump on ‘gay marriage bandwagon’ – bishops

MANILA, May 27, 2015— The Philippines must not rush headlong into allowing “same-sex marriage” just because other countries have allowed it, Catholic bishops said.

Reacting to the recent legalization of gay marriage in Ireland, Bishop Jose Oliveros of Malolos said the country has its own values, tradition, and Constitution to follow.

“Just because Ireland approved same-sex marriage, it does not mean we have to follow. That’s simply [a] bandwagon mentality,” he said.

He said the society should defend traditional marriage because ideally, he said, children should have mother and father role models during their formative years.

Bishop Honesto Ongtioco of Cubao said the Church is against same-sex unions because it goes against God’s teaching on marriage.

“If we want to remain Godly, let us be faithful to what the Lord will is,” Ongtioco said.

Nature itself is a strong enough argument gainst gay marriage, said Archbishop Angel Lagdameo of Jaro.

“Same-sex marriage is against the natural law. On the part of the Catholic Church, such a marriage is against our canon law,” he said. (CBCPNews)
