How Catholic doctors are defying RH law

DAVAO City, June 29, 2016 – It ain’t over till the fat lady sings, as an expression goes. Despite the passage of the hotly-debated RH Law in 2012, medical professionals’ ongoing efforts and plans for future initiatives to block the full implementation of Republic Act No. 10354 took center stage during the 6th National Annual Doctors For Life Philippines – Family Advocacy in Media Foundation (DFL-FAMAF) Joint Convention last June 16 to 18.

According to Philippines country director for Human Life International and a practicing physician, Dr. Rene Bullecer, two major groups of doctors “are committed to block the full implementation of the RH law via legal means and to conduct [a] vigorous information drive on the untold medical dangers of the artificial contraceptives, including its abortifacient effects.”

The Catholic Physicians Guild in the Philippines (CPGP) and the Doctors for Life – Philippines (DFL-Phils), he said, are not just bent on defying the RH Law but are also gearing up to snuff out plans to resurrect bills to legalize abortion and physician-assisted suicide in the country.

Bullecer, who is also the DFL vice-president, early on the RH agenda was seriously destabilized with the procurement of a temporary restraining order (TRO) against all abortifacient artificial family planning paraphernalia, thanks to the Alliance for the Family Foundation Philippines, Inc. (ALFI), specifically, Atty. Girlie Noche, who did “an excellent job”.

“This created a major headache to the anti-life DOH hierarchy,” he said.

Show of force

Bullecer said, pro-life prayer rallies in key cities nationwide are in the offing.

“I’m sure, all sorts [of] pro-life activism via show of force must be prepared similar to our anti-RH bill efforts in the past,” he added.

A total of 204 para-medical professionals, lay leaders, supporters and religious sisters from all over the country representing 15 different archdioceses and dioceses converged in this city to attend the DFL-FAMAF event.

Adding color and success to the 3-day event was the introduction of a new advocacy group exclusive for women called JOSEFA. The group’s name is taken from the woman who is considered the Florence Nightingale of the Philippines, a World War II heroine and the foundress of the Girls Scouts of the Philippines, the late Josefa Llanes Escoda.

Uniting pro-life women

JOSEFA is open to all pro-life women who wish to participate in various pro-family and pro-life activities designed to celebrate the teachings of the Catholic Church, especially on natural family planning through fertility awareness as well as on the beauty of family.

The organization is as an alternative women’s group which will cater to the authentic needs of every Filipina.
Current chairman of the Episcopal Commission on Family and Life – CBCP, Daet Bishop Gilbert A. Garcera, D.D. inducted the officers and members of JOSEFA as well as the new members of DFL and FAMAF.

CBCP vice president, Davao Archbishop Romulo G. Valles, DD was also present at the said event. (CBCPNews)
