Romans
Chapter 8:1-5

The Flesh and the Spirit

1Hence, now there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.

2For the law of the spirit of life in Christ Jesus has freed you from the law of sin and death.

3For what the law, weakened by the flesh, was powerless to do, this God has done: by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for the sake of sin, he condemned sin in the flesh,

4so that the righteous decree of the law might be fulfilled in us, who live not according to the flesh but according to the spirit.

5For those who live according to the flesh are concerned with the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the spirit with the things of the spirit.

Galatians
Chapter 5:13-26
Freedom for Service

13For you were called for freedom, brothers.  But do not use this freedom as an opportunity for the flesh; rather, serve one another through love.

14For the whole law is fulfilled in one statement, namely, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”

15But if you go on biting and devouring one another, beware that you are not consumed by one another.

16 I say, then: live by the Spirit and you will certainly not gratify the desire of the flesh.

17For the flesh has desires against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; these are opposed to each other, so that you may not do what you want.

18But if you are guided by the Spirit, you are not under the law.

19 Now the works of the flesh are obvious: immorality, impurity, licentiousness,

20idolatry, sorcery, hatreds, rivalry, jealousy, outbursts of fury, acts of selfishness, dissensions, factions,

21occasions of envy, drinking bouts, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.

22In contrast, the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness,

23gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law.

24Now those who belong to Christ [Jesus] have crucified their flesh with its passions and desires.

25If we live in the Spirit, let us also follow the Spirit.

26Let us not be conceited, provoking one another, envious of one another.u

Ephesians
Chapter 5:6-20
Duty to Live in the Light

6 Let no one deceive you with empty arguments, for because of these things the wrath of God is coming upon the disobedient.

7So do not be associated with them.

8For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light,

9for light produces every kind of goodness and righteousness and truth.

10Try to learn what is pleasing to the Lord.

11Take no part in the fruitless works of darkness; rather expose them,

12for it is shameful even to mention the things done by them in secret;

13but everything exposed by the light becomes visible,

14for everything that becomes visible is light. Therefore, it says:
“Awake, O sleeper,
and arise from the dead,
and Christ will give you light.”

15 Watch carefully then how you live, not as foolish persons but as wise,

16making the most of the opportunity, because the days are evil.

17Therefore, do not continue in ignorance, but try to understand what is the will of the Lord.

18And do not get drunk on wine, in which lies debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit,
19addressing one another [in] psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and playing to the Lord in your hearts,

20giving thanks always and for everything in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to God the Father.

2 Thessalonians
Chapter 2:1-17
Christ and the Lawless One

1We ask you, brothers, with regard to the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our assembling with him,

2not to be shaken out of your minds suddenly, or to be alarmed either by a “spirit,” or by an oral statement, or by a letter allegedly from us to the effect that the day of the Lord is at hand.

3Let no one deceive you in any way. For unless the apostasy comes first and the lawless one is revealed, the one doomed to perdition,

4 who opposes and exalts himself above every so-called god and object of worship, so as to seat himself in the temple of God,* claiming that he is a god—

5do you not recall that while I was still with you I told you these things?

6And now you know what is restraining,* that he may be revealed in his time.

7* For the mystery of lawlessness is already at work. But the one who restrains is to do so only for the present, until he is removed from the scene.

8And then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord [Jesus] will kill with the breath of his mouth and render powerless by the manifestation of his coming,

9the one whose coming springs from the power of Satan in every mighty deed and in signs and wonders that lie,

10and in every wicked deceit for those who are perishing because they have not accepted the love of truth so that they may be saved.

11Therefore, God is sending them a deceiving power so that they may believe the lie,

12that all who have not believed the truth but have approved wrongdoing may be condemned.

13But we ought to give thanks to God for you always, brothers loved by the Lord, because God chose you as the firstfruits* for salvation through sanctification by the Spirit and belief in truth.

14To this end he has [also] called you through our gospel to possess the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.

15Therefore, brothers, stand firm and hold fast to the traditions that you were taught, either by an oral statement or by a letter of ours.

16May our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father, who has loved us and given us everlasting encouragement and good hope through his grace,

17encourage your hearts and strengthen them in every good deed and word.

Romans
Chapter 13:8-10
Love Fulfills the Law

8Owe nothing to anyone, except to love one another; for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law.

9The commandments, “You shall not commit adultery; you shall not kill; you shall not steal; you shall not covet,” and whatever other commandment there may be, are summed up in this saying, [namely] “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”

10Love does no evil to the neighbor; hence, love is the fulfillment of the law.

Romans
Chapter 13:1-7

Obedience in Authority

1Let every person be subordinate to the higher authorities, for there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been established by God.

2Therefore, whoever resists authority opposes what God has appointed, and those who oppose it will bring judgment upon themselves.

3For rulers are not a cause of fear to good conduct, but to evil.b Do you wish to have no fear of authority? Then do what is good and you will receive approval from it,

4for it is a servant of God for your good. But if you do evil, be afraid, for it does not bear the sword without purpose; it is the servant of God to inflict wrath on the evildoer.

5Therefore, it is necessary to be subject not only because of the wrath but also because of conscience.

6This is why you also pay taxes, for the authorities are ministers of God, devoting themselves to this very thing.

7Pay to all their dues, taxes to whom taxes are due, toll to whom toll is due, respect to whom respect is due, honor to whom honor is due.

Acts
Chapter 2:42-47
Communal Life

42 They devoted themselves to the teaching of the apostles and to the communal life, to the breaking of the bread and to the prayers.

43Awe came upon everyone, and many wonders and signs were done through the apostles.
44All who believed were together and had all things in common;

45they would sell their property and possessions and divide them among all according to each one’s need.

46Every day they devoted themselves to meeting together in the temple area and to breaking bread in their homes. They ate their meals with exultation and sincerity of heart,

47praising God and enjoying favor with all the people. And every day the Lord added to their number those who were being saved.

James
Chapter 1:2-11
Perseverance in Trial

2 Consider it all joy, my brothers, when you encounter various trials,

3for you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance.

4And let perseverance be perfect, so that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.

5But if any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God who gives to all generously and ungrudgingly, and he will be given it.

6But he should ask in faith, not doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed about by the wind.

7For that person must not suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord, 8since he is a man of two minds, unstable in all his ways.

9The brother in lowly circumstances should take pride in his high standing,

10and the rich one in his lowliness, for he will pass away “like the flower of the field.”

11For the sun comes up with its scorching heat and dries up the grass, its flower droops, and the beauty of its appearance vanishes. So will the rich person fade away in the midst of his pursuits.

Matthew
Chapter 7:1-5

Judging Others

1 “Stop judging, that you may not be judged.

2For as you judge, so will you be judged, and the measure with which you measure will be measured out to you.

3Why do you notice the splinter in your brother’s eye, but do not perceive the wooden beam in your own eye?

4How can you say to your brother, ‘Let me remove that splinter from your eye,’ while the wooden beam is in your eye?

5You hypocrite,* remove the wooden beam from your eye first; then you will see clearly to remove the splinter from your brother’s eye.

Psalms
Chapter 49:6-14

Confidence in God rather than in Riches

6Why should I fear in evil days,
with the iniquity of my assailants surrounding me,
7Of those who trust in their wealth
and boast of their abundant riches?
8 No man can ransom even a brother,
or pay to God his own ransom.c
9The redemption of his soul is costly;
and he will pass away forever.
10Will he live on forever, then,
and never see the Pit of Corruption?
11Indeed, he will see that the wise die,
and the fool will perish together with the senseless,d
and they leave their wealth to others.e
12Their tombs are their homes forever,
their dwellings through all generations,
“They named countries after themselves”
13—but man does not abide in splendor.
He is like the beasts—they perish.f

II

14This is the way of those who trust in themselves,
and the end of those who take pleasure in their own mouth.

EFESO 4:17-18  5:15-17 HEBREWS 4"7
