Pope to CBCP: Seek ‘new ways’ to proclaim God’s mercy

CEBU City, Jan. 22, 2016— Pope Francis has called on Filipino bishops to seek “new ways” to proclaim the “wonder” of God’s mercy for the all the people.
In a letter to the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines, the Pope again emphasized the need for the Church to spread God’s “enduring love” for everyone.
By doing so, the Pope prays that this Jubilee Year of Mercy may truly be a time “to gaze even more attentively on mercy so that we may become more effective sign of Father’s action in our lives.”
The letter was read by Papal nuncio Archbishop Giuseppe Pinto at the formal opening of the bishops’ 112th plenary assembly at the Oakridge Horizons in Cebu City on Friday afternoon.
The Pope’s message was relayed by Cardinal Pietro Parolin, Vatican’s Secretary of State, to the CBCP.
Around 98 cardinals and bishops are currently in attendance on the meeting which will end on Sunday. The CBCP has 131-member bishops, including 37 who are retired.
The bishops are expected to tackle the many concerns of the Church, including the May 9 general elections.
The meeting was preceded by a Mass presided over by Archbishop Pinto at the Cebu Metropolitan Cathedral.
The plenary assembly is the CBCP’s highest decision-making body which meets in regular session twice a year—in January and July. (CBCPNews)
