THE RETURN OF THE TWELVE AND
THE FEEDING OF FIVE THOUSAND
MATTHEW 14:13-21

Matthew
Chapter 14

13
4 When Jesus heard of it, he withdrew in a boat to a deserted place by himself. The crowds heard of this and followed him on foot from their towns.
14
When he disembarked and saw the vast crowd, his heart was moved with pity for them, and he cured their sick.
15
When it was evening, the disciples approached him and said, "This is a deserted place and it is already late; dismiss the crowds so that they can go to the villages and buy food for themselves."
16
(Jesus) said to them, "There is no need for them to go away; give them some food yourselves."
17
But they said to him, "Five loaves and two fish are all we have here."
18
Then he said, "Bring them here to me,"
19
and he ordered the crowds to sit down on the grass. Taking 5 the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, he said the blessing, broke the loaves, and gave them to the disciples, who in turn gave them to the crowds.
20
They all ate and were satisfied, and they picked up the fragments left over 6 --twelve wicker baskets full.
21
Those who ate were about five thousand men, not counting women and children.

THE FEEDING OF THE FOUR THOUSAND
MARK 8:1-10

Mark
Chapter 8

1
1 In those days when there again was a great crowd without anything to eat, he summoned the disciples and said,
2
"My heart is moved with pity for the crowd, because they have been with me now for three days and have nothing to eat.
3
If I send them away hungry to their homes, they will collapse on the way, and some of them have come a great distance."
4
His disciples answered him, "Where can anyone get enough bread to satisfy them here in this deserted place?"
5
Still he asked them, "How many loaves do you have?" "Seven," they replied.
6
2 He ordered the crowd to sit down on the ground. Then, taking the seven loaves he gave thanks, broke them, and gave them to his disciples to distribute, and they distributed them to the crowd.
7
They also had a few fish. He said the blessing over them and ordered them distributed also.
8
They ate and were satisfied. They picked up the fragments left over--seven baskets.
9
There were about four thousand people. He dismissed them
10
and got into the boat with his disciples and came to the region of Dalmanutha.

Miracle on Loaves and Fishes

Loaves and fishes: How did Jesus do it?

The biblical account of the feeding of the five thousand with loaves and fishes is one of the few stories that are recounted by all four of the Gospel writers. Each of the accounts contains a verse similar to this one found in the Book of Matthew: "They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over. The number of those who ate was about five thousand men, besides women and children" (Matthew 14:20-21).

How did Jesus do it? To answer this question, we must look at two obvious points that are crucial to an understanding of this great deed. First, the act that Jesus performed was humanly impossible. Without any contradiction, a lunch of two fish and five loaves of bread, while more than enough for a young boy, was insufficient to feed upwards of 12,000 individuals (taking into account the fact that there were women and children besides the 5000 men). Second, Jesus of Nazareth was more than a man. His disciples, who played a key role in this happening, were not yet fully aware of who Jesus really was though they had already seen His power.

By now, Jesus had taken authority over the elements, healed a paralyzed man, and raised a dead girl. Nevertheless, they had not understood that the things that He had done, including this deed, were only things that could be done by God Himself. They had not realized that Jesus was actually God come to earth in human form. We know this is true from Christ's conversation with Philip: "Philip said, 'Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us.' Jesus answered: 'Don't you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, "Show us the Father"?" (John 14:8-9).

The feeding of the five thousand or the multiplying of the loaves and fishes was a miracle. How did Jesus do it? He did it by the power of God. This is a simplistic statement, but carries an enormous truth. It is not so much that the power of God is beyond human power as that the power of God is other than human power. That this "other than human" power is indefinably great is evident. We may know what kind of power it is through the things that He has created, from the unique pattern of every snowflake that falls, to the ability of birds to fly in defiance of the laws of gravity. These are miracles we see everyday.

God's power is unfathomable; this miracle is a clear example of this. Consider what was done: "'Bring them here to me,' he said. And he directed the people to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves. Then he gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the people" (Matthew 14:18-19).

Somewhere, between the time that Jesus received the food and the time that He handed it back to the disciples to feed the people, the meal had multiplied. Here is the invisible interaction of heaven and earth, the kingdom of heaven and the kingdom of natural things, Jesus Christ, God, and man. It is similar to the miracle of the water turned to wine. The jugs contained water, but when the liquid was poured out, it was good wine. When did the change take place? How did the multiplication occur? Miracles are only miracles to we humans; miracles are what God does by virtue of who He is and the power inherent in His being. Jesus saw a need through His eyes of compassion; the people were hungry and needed food. He, through the power of God simply did what needed to be done. There is always the two-fold significance to the acts of Jesus. He meets a need and He shows forth the glory of God. It was done by the mingling of love and power.

The Miracles of the Loaves and Fishes

As evening approached, the disciples came to him and said, “This is a remote place, and it’s already getting late. Send the crowds away, so they can go to the villages and buy themselves some food.” Jesus replied, “They do not need to go away. You give them something to eat.” “We have here only five loaves of bread and two fish,” they answered. “Bring them here to me,” he said. And he directed the people to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves. Then he gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the people. They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over. The number of those who ate was about five thousand men, besides women and children. -- Matthew 14:15-21
Jesus called his disciples to him and said, “I have compassion for these people; they have already been with me three days and have nothing to eat. I do not want to send them away hungry, or they may collapse on the way. His disciples answered, “Where could we get enough bread in this remote place to feed such a crowd?” “How many loaves do you have?” Jesus asked. “Seven,” they replied, “and a few small fish.” He told the crowd to sit down on the ground. Then he took the seven loaves and the fish, and when he had given thanks, he broke them and gave them to the disciples, and they in turn to the people. They all ate and were satisfied. Afterward the disciples picked up seven basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over. The number of those who ate was four thousand, besides women and children. -- Matthew 15:29-38
By this time it was late in the day, so his disciples came to him. “This is a remote place,” they said, “and it’s already very late. Send the people away so they can go to the surrounding countryside and villages and buy themselves something to eat. But he answered, “You give them something to eat.” They said to him, “That would take eight months of a man’s wages! Are we to go and spend that much on bread and give it to them to eat?” “How many loaves do you have?” he asked. “Go and see.” When they found out, they said, “Five - and two fish.”  Then Jesus directed them to have all the people sit down in groups on the green grass. So they sat down in groups of hundreds and fifties. Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves. Then he gave them to his disciples to set before the people. He also divided the two fish among them all. They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces of bread and fish. The number of the men who had eaten was five thousand. -- Mark 6:35-44
Two nearly identical miracles performed under similar circumstances, probably only a few days apart, yet the disciples remained doubtful, and were surprised to find that the Lord could pull it off.
In both instances, Jesus drawn crowds, who remained with him during long periods of teaching and preaching the gospel of the kingdom. They were in a distant place and evening was approaching.

JESUS CHRIST IS THE GOOD SHEPHERD
JOHN 10:1-21

John
Chapter 10

7
5 So Jesus said again, "Amen, amen, I say to you, I am the gate for the sheep.
8
6 All who came [before me] are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not listen to them.
9
I am the gate. Whoever enters through me will be saved, and will come in and go out and find pasture.
10
A thief comes only to steal and slaughter and destroy; I came so that they might have life and have it more abundantly.
11
I am the good shepherd. A good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.
12
A hired man, who is not a shepherd and whose sheep are not his own, sees a wolf coming and leaves the sheep and runs away, and the wolf catches and scatters them.
13
This is because he works for pay and has no concern for the sheep.
14
I am the good shepherd, and I know mine and mine know me,
15
just as the Father knows me and I know the Father; and I will lay down my life for the sheep.
16
I have other sheep 7 that do not belong to this fold. These also I must lead, and they will hear my voice, and there will be one flock, one shepherd.
17
This is why the Father loves me, because I lay down my life in order to take it up again.
18
No one takes it from me, but I lay it down on my own. I have power to lay it down, and power to take it up again. 8 This command I have received from my Father."
19
Again there was a division among the Jews because of these words.
20
Many of them said, "He is possessed and out of his mind; why listen to him?"
21
Others said, "These are not the words of one possessed; surely a demon cannot open the eyes of the blind, can he?"

SIGNS AND WONDERS OF THE APOSTLES
ACTS 5:12-16

Acts
Chapter 5

12
2 Many signs and wonders were done among the people at the hands of the apostles. They were all together in Solomon's portico.
13
None of the others dared to join them, but the people esteemed them.
14
Yet more than ever, believers in the Lord, great numbers of men and women, were added to them.
15
Thus they even carried the sick out into the streets and laid them on cots and mats so that when Peter came by, at least his shadow might fall on one or another of them.
16
A large number of people from the towns in the vicinity of Jerusalem also gathered, bringing the sick and those disturbed by unclean spirits, and they were all cured.

The Miracles Of Jesus
Prove That He Is
God Made Man

"And immediately he arose; and taking up his bed, went his way in the sight of all; so that all wondered and glorified God, saying: We never saw the like." -Mark 2:12

Miracle of Jesus

The miracles of Jesus are of great importance to the Faith. In order to be deeply rooted in the faith you should be familiar with and appreciate the significance of the many miracles performed by Jesus.
A miracle is something impossible for us to do and in some unexplained way changes the course of nature.

It is true that these miracles were performed to show that He loved us. But of greater importance, the miracles of Jesus were performed to show that He is God. The chief teaching of the Catholic Church about Jesus Christ is that He is God made man. The proof of this teaching can be found in the miracles of Jesus.

Miracles of Jesus - Jesus Healed The Sick, Cured The Lame, And Gave Sight To The Blind

Instances when the miracles of Jesus showed His healing powers are found in the Bible. One such miracles of Jesus took place at the Pool of Bethsaida. This pool was a popular place in Jerusalem where many sick people came. An angel was there. The angel would descend upon the pool and stir up the water. The first person to be dipped into the pool would be cured of whatever afflicted him.

One crippled man laid on his mat waiting in hopes that someone would lift him into the pool. But it was so crowded, his turn never came. Jesus came up to him and asked why he lay there. The man explained his circumstances to Our Lord. Jesus said to the man, "Arise, take up thy bed, and walk." -John 5:11
The man got up and was cured.

Another well known miracle of Jesus is the healing of the centurion's servant. A Roman centurion or soldier came up to Jesus. His servant was very sick, even near death. He asked Jesus to heal his servant. Jesus told the soldier to lead Him to the sick boy. The centurion said, "Lord, I am not worthy that thou shouldst enter under my roof: but only say the word, and my servant shall be healed." -Matthew 8:8

Our Lord was very pleased with the faith and humility of this centurion and said in reply, 'Amen I say to you, I have not found so great faith in Israel...Go, and as thou hast believed, so be it done to thee.' And the servant was healed at the same hour." -Matthew 8:10,13

During Mass the faithful repeat words similar to those of the centurion after the priest holds up the Holy Eucharist and says "Behold the Lamb of God..."
Many other occasions when the miracles of Jesus cured the sick include the paralyzed man (Mark 2:1-12), the two blind men (Matthew 9:27-30) and the ten lepers (Luke 17:13-19).

Miracles of Jesus- Jesus Controlled The Elements Of Nature
The miracles of Jesus defied the priciples of nature. These miracles all pointed toward the great miracle of the Holy Eucharist. Jesus first miracle was the wedding at Cana.

Another such miracle was the large catch of fish. Jesus was preaching to the multitudes on the shore from Peter's boat while Peter was fishing. Jesus told Peter to lower his nets onto the other side of the boat. Because they had caught no fish that day, Peter said to Jesus, "Master, we have labored all the night, and have taken nothing: but at thy word I will let down the net." -Luke 5:5.

He then did as Jesus instructed. When the nets were raised, there were so many fish in them that the nets broke. Another boat came to them and helped them load all the fish onto the two boats. Both boats were so full of fish that the boats sank deep into the water. At that time, Peter fell down upon his knees and proclaimed, "Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord." -Luke 5:8.

Peter then knew that Jesus was God.

Jesus said to Peter in reply, 'Fear not: from henceforth thou shalt catch men.' And having brought their ships to land, leaving all things, they followed him." -Luke 10-11.

Once when Jesus was preaching, a great multitude gathered to listen to Him. So many people where there in fact that the Bible says there were 5,000 men not counting women and children. It was getting late and no one had eaten so the apostles went to Jesus and told Him to send the crowds away, so everyone could go and find themselves something to eat.

"But Jesus said to them, 'They have no need to go: give you them to eat.' They answered him: 'We have not here, but five loaves, and two fishes.' He said to them: 'Bring them hither to me.' -Matthew 14:16-18

Jesus told the people to sit down on the grass. He then blessed the bread and broke it and instructed the apostles to hand out the food. There was enough food to feed the entire crowd of more than five thousand people. When the left over food was gathered up, it filled twelve baskets. This miracle of Jesus is a precursor to the miracle of the Holy Eucharist.

Two other times Jesus performed miracles and by doing so demonstrated His command over nature is when He calmed the storm with His hand (Luke 8:23-24) and when He walked upon water (Matthew 14:26-31).

Miracles of Jesus- Jesus Brought The Dead Back To Life

The Raising of Lazarus is an endearing event that shows the very human nature of Our Lord. In the Biblical account, you will find the words "Jesus wept." -John 11:35

This is the shortest sentence in the entire Bible and yet it relays a profound message. So strong was Jesus' human nature that He Who was both true man and true God, wept over the death of His friend.

Lazarus was the brother of Mary and Martha. He had gotten sick and died while Jesus was away preaching. When Mary and Martha found Jesus and told Him Lazarus was dead, he had already been dead for four days. Jesus instructed Mary and Martha to take Him to the tomb where Lazarus' body was laid. On the way there, He was overcome with grief and Jesus wept.

Upon arriving at the tomb, Jesus asked that the stone be rolled away. He then said, "'Lazarus, come forth.' And presently he that had been dead came forth, bound feet and hands with winding bands; and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus said to them: 'Loose him, and let him go.'" -John 11:43-44
Two other times the miracles of Jesus brought the dead back to life are Jairus' daughter and the widows son (Luke 7:12-16).

The account of Jairus' daughter goes like this, "And all wept and mourned for her. But he said: 'Weep not; the maid is not dead, but sleepeth.' And they laughed him to scorn, knowing that she was dead. But he taking her by the hand, cried out, saying: 'Maid, arise.' And her spirit returned, and she arose immediately. And he bid them give her to eat." -Luke 8:52-55

Miracles of Jesus- Jesus' Greatest Miracles

All of Jesus' miracles so far discussed and the many others contained in the Gospels point to the two most important miracles of Jesus, the institution of the Holy Eucharist and the Resurrection. Jesus demonstrated His command over the elements of nature. Note the way He changed water into wine at Cana and the time when He multiplied loaves of bread and fish. Many times, Jesus promised He would give His own flesh as food to eat. You would do well to memorize these words of Our Lord:

"Amen, amen I say unto you: He that believeth in me, hath everlasting life. I am the bread of life. Your fathers did eat manna in the desert, and are dead. This is the bread which cometh down from heaven; that if any man eat of it, he may not die. I am the living bread which came down from heaven. If any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever; and the bread that I will give, is my flesh, for the life of the world...Then Jesus said to them: Amen, amen I say unto you: Except you eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, you shall not have life in you. He that eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath everlasting life: and I will raise him up in the last day. For my flesh is meat indeed: and my blood is drink indeed. He that eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, abideth in me, and I in him. As the living Father hath sent me, and I live by the Father; so he that eateth me, the same also shall live by me. This is the bread that came down from heaven. Not as your fathers did eat manna, and are dead. He that eateth this bread, shall live for ever." -John 6:47-59
Jesus performed this great miracle at the Last Supper when He changed bread and wine into His body and blood. He told the apostles to "Do this for a commemoration of me." -Luke 22:19 Jesus intended that this sacrifice be carried on until the end of time. During the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, the priest through the power of Jesus turns the Sacred Host into the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ, following the command Jesus gave the apostles at the Last Supper. In this way, the unbloody sacrifice of Jesus on the Cross is offered to God everyday by Catholic priests all throughout the world.
Through the institution of the Holy Eucharist, Jesus' fulfilled the promise He made before He ascended into Heaven: "Behold I am with you all days, even to the consummation of the world."
Jesus is with us, body and soul, in our tabernacles and upon our altars hidden under the appearances of bread and wine.
So if ever the truth of the teaching on Blessed Sacrament are put into question remember all the miracles of Jesus. If He could change water into wine and multiply loaves of bread, surely He could change bread and wine into His own Body and Blood.
The Resurrection is the cornerstone of the belief in Jesus Christ. The dogma of the resurrection allows Christians to have a firm faith in all Jesus teachings because He promised He would rise on the third day. And rise He did, by His own Divine Power. This physical proof that Jesus did conquer death and rose from the dead gives you the confidence to belief in what you cannot see namely the Holy Eucharist.

"Jesus saith to him: Because thou hast seen me, Thomas, thou hast believed: blessed are they that have not seen, and have believed." -John 20:29
In this verse, Jesus is speaking about you and me. But we can believe because we have God's word for it and the miracles of Jesus to back it up.
Before you can intellectually accept and hold the teachings of Jesus and His Church, you must have faith that Jesus is as He claimed, God made man. As you can see the miracles of Jesus confirm this chief teaching of the Catholic Church.

THE VINE AND THE BRANCHES / THE WORLDS HATERED
JOHN 15:1-27

John
Chapter 15

1
1 2 "I am the true vine, and my Father is the vine grower.
2
He takes away every branch in me that does not bear fruit, and everyone that does he prunes 3 so that it bears more fruit.
3
You are already pruned because of the word that I spoke to you.
4
Remain in me, as I remain in you. Just as a branch cannot bear fruit on its own unless it remains on the vine, so neither can you unless you remain in me.
5
I am the vine, you are the branches. Whoever remains in me and I in him will bear much fruit, because without me you can do nothing.
6
4 Anyone who does not remain in me will be thrown out like a branch and wither; people will gather them and throw them into a fire and they will be burned.
7
If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask for whatever you want and it will be done for you.
8
By this is my Father glorified, that you bear much fruit and become my disciples.
9
As the Father loves me, so I also love you. Remain in my love.
10
If you keep my commandments, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father's commandments and remain in his love.
11
"I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and your joy may be complete.
12
This is my commandment: love one another as I love you.
13
5 No one has greater love than this, to lay down one's life for one's friends.
14
You are my friends if you do what I command you.
15
I no longer call you slaves, because a slave does not know what his master is doing. I have called you friends, 6 because I have told you everything I have heard from my Father.
16
It was not you who chose me, but I who chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit that will remain, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name he may give you.
17
This I command you: love one another.

THE WORLDS HATERED
JOHN 15:18-27

18
7 "If the world hates you, realize that it hated me first.
19
If you belonged to the world, the world would love its own; but because you do not belong to the world, and I have chosen you out of the world, the world hates you.
20
Remember the word I spoke to you, 8 'No slave is greater than his master.' If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you. If they kept my word, they will also keep yours.
21
And they will do all these things to you on account of my name, 9 because they do not know the one who sent me.
22
If I had not come and spoken 10 to them, they would have no sin; but as it is they have no excuse for their sin.
23
Whoever hates me also hates my Father.
24
If I had not done works among them that no one else ever did, they would not have sin; but as it is, they have seen and hated both me and my Father.
25
But in order that the word written in their law 11 might be fulfilled, 'They hated me without cause.'
26
"When the Advocate comes whom I will send 12 you from the Father, the Spirit of truth that proceeds from the Father, he will testify to me.
27
And you also testify, because you have been with me from the beginning.

Christians, Muslims Band Together to Stop Attacks

By Efrem Graham
News Anchor & Reporter
Friday, July 06, 2012

Kenya's Christian and Muslim leaders are joining forces to prevent violence from erupting following deadly attacks on churches.

Muslims are pledging to join Christians to guard churches in the country's North Eastern Province, where the most recent attacks took place.

Father Nicholas Mutua pointed to the many signs of a weekend grenade attack at the Catholic church in Garissa, where at least three people were wounded.

"Today we were attacked. Those people who came, they threw some grenades from outside over the fence," he said.

Voice of the Martyrs' Todd Nettleton spoke to Christian World News about the situation in Kenya and Somalia. Watch his comments, following this report.

The explosion was one of two simultaneous attacks on churches that made headlines in Kenya Sunday.

The blasts at the African Inland Church and the Catholic church killed at least 15 people, including two police officers.

"From our sister church, A.I.C., I went to the mortuary and I saw 14 bodies - 14 bodies in the mortuary. Two police officers who were shot on the head," Father Mutua said.

"The attackers, one of whom was injured in the attack, escaped immediately, and they are also said to have fled away with two police guns," he added.

Police are investigating the incidents. But many blame al-Shabab, an al Qaeda-linked militant group from Somalia, since Garissa is just 120 miles from the Somali border.

Political observers say the deadly explosions are meant to trigger sectarian violence between Christians and Muslims.

Safari Musembi witnessed one of the attacks. He said he remembers the grenade landing near him and a friend that he pulled to safer place.
Musembi is one of at least 40 people still recovering from injuries.
