THE BIBLE VERSES

THE ENTRY INTO JERUSALEM
MARK 11:1-11

Mark
Chapter 11

1
1 When they drew near to Jerusalem, to Bethphage and Bethany at the Mount of Olives, he sent two of his disciples
2
and said to them, "Go into the village opposite you, and immediately on entering it, you will find a colt tethered on which no one has ever sat. Untie it and bring it here.
3
If anyone should say to you, 'Why are you doing this?' reply, 'The Master has need of it and will send it back here at once.'"
4
So they went off and found a colt tethered at a gate outside on the street, and they untied it.
5
Some of the bystanders said to them, "What are you doing, untying the colt?"
6
They answered them just as Jesus had told them to, and they permitted them to do it.
7
So they brought the colt to Jesus and put their cloaks over it. And he sat on it.
8
Many people spread their cloaks on the road, and others spread leafy branches that they had cut from the fields.
9
Those preceding him as well as those following kept crying out: "Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!
10
Blessed is the kingdom of our father David that is to come! Hosanna in the highest!"
11
He entered Jerusalem and went into the temple area. He looked around at everything and, since it was already late, went out to Bethany with the Twelve.

JESUS TRIAL AND CRUCIFIXION AND RESURRECTION
LUKE 23:1-56  /  24-1:12

Luke
Chapter 23

1
1 Then the whole assembly of them arose and brought him before Pilate.
2
They brought charges against him, saying, "We found this man misleading our people; he opposes the payment of taxes to Caesar and maintains that he is the Messiah, a king."
3
Pilate asked him, "Are you the king of the Jews?" He said to him in reply, "You say so."
4
Pilate then addressed the chief priests and the crowds, "I find this man not guilty."
5
But they were adamant and said, "He is inciting the people with his teaching throughout all Judea, from Galilee where he began even to here."
6
2 On hearing this Pilate asked if the man was a Galilean;
7
and upon learning that he was under Herod's jurisdiction, he sent him to Herod who was in Jerusalem at that time.
8
Herod was very glad to see Jesus; he had been wanting to see him for a long time, for he had heard about him and had been hoping to see him perform some sign.
9
He questioned him at length, but he gave him no answer.
10
The chief priests and scribes, meanwhile, stood by accusing him harshly.
11
(Even) Herod and his soldiers treated him contemptuously and mocked him, and after clothing him in resplendent garb, he sent him back to Pilate.
12
Herod and Pilate became friends that very day, even though they had been enemies formerly.
13
Pilate then summoned the chief priests, the rulers, and the people
14
and said to them, "You brought this man to me and accused him of inciting the people to revolt. I have conducted my investigation in your presence and have not found this man guilty of the charges you have brought against him,
15
nor did Herod, for he sent him back to us. So no capital crime has been committed by him.
16
Therefore I shall have him flogged and then release him."
17
3
18
But all together they shouted out, "Away with this man! Release Barabbas to us."
19
(Now Barabbas had been imprisoned for a rebellion that had taken place in the city and for murder.)
20
Again Pilate addressed them, still wishing to release Jesus,
21
but they continued their shouting, "Crucify him! Crucify him!"
22
Pilate addressed them a third time, "What evil has this man done? I found him guilty of no capital crime. Therefore I shall have him flogged and then release him."
23
With loud shouts, however, they persisted in calling for his crucifixion, and their voices prevailed.
24
The verdict of Pilate was that their demand should be granted.
25
So he released the man who had been imprisoned for rebellion and murder, for whom they asked, and he handed Jesus over to them to deal with as they wished.
26
4 As they led him away they took hold of a certain Simon, a Cyrenian, who was coming in from the country; and after laying the cross on him, they made him carry it behind Jesus.
27
A large crowd of people followed Jesus, including many women who mourned and lamented him.
28
Jesus turned to them and said, "Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me; weep instead for yourselves and for your children,
29
for indeed, the days are coming when people will say, 'Blessed are the barren, the wombs that never bore and the breasts that never nursed.'
30
At that time people will say to the mountains, 'Fall upon us!' and to the hills, 'Cover us!'
31
for if these things are done when the wood is green what will happen when it is dry?"
32
Now two others, both criminals, were led away with him to be executed.
33
When they came to the place called the Skull, they crucified him and the criminals there, one on his right, the other on his left.
34
[Then Jesus said, "Father, forgive them, they know not what they do."] 5 They divided his garments by casting lots.
35
The people stood by and watched; the rulers, meanwhile, sneered at him and said, "He saved others, let him save himself if he is the chosen one, the Messiah of God."
36
Even the soldiers jeered at him. As they approached to offer him wine
37
they called out, "If you are King of the Jews, save yourself."
38
Above him there was an inscription that read, "This is the King of the Jews."
39
6 Now one of the criminals hanging there reviled Jesus, saying, "Are you not the Messiah? Save yourself and us."
40
The other, however, rebuking him, said in reply, "Have you no fear of God, for you are subject to the same condemnation?
41
And indeed, we have been condemned justly, for the sentence we received corresponds to our crimes, but this man has done nothing criminal."
42
Then he said, "Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom."
43
He replied to him, "Amen, I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise."
44
7 It was now about noon and darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon
45
because of an eclipse of the sun. Then the veil of the temple was torn down the middle.
46
Jesus cried out in a loud voice, "Father, into your hands I commend my spirit"; and when he had said this he breathed his last.
47
The centurion who witnessed what had happened glorified God and said, "This man was innocent 8 beyond doubt."
48
When all the people who had gathered for this spectacle saw what had happened, they returned home beating their breasts;
49
but all his acquaintances stood at a distance, including the women who had followed him from Galilee and saw these events.
50
Now there was a virtuous and righteous man named Joseph who, though he was a member of the council,
51
had not consented to their plan of action. He came from the Jewish town of Arimathea and was awaiting the kingdom of God.
52
He went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus.
53
After he had taken the body down, he wrapped it in a linen cloth and laid him in a rock-hewn tomb in which no one had yet been buried.
54
It was the day of preparation, and the sabbath was about to begin.
55
The women who had come from Galilee with him followed behind, and when they had seen the tomb and the way in which his body was laid in it,
56
they returned and prepared spices and perfumed oils. Then they rested on the sabbath according to the commandment.

Luke
Chapter 24

1
1 But at daybreak on the first day of the week they took the spices they had prepared and went to the tomb.
2
They found the stone rolled away from the tomb;
3
but when they entered, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus.
4
While they were puzzling over this, behold, two men in dazzling garments appeared to them.
5
They were terrified and bowed their faces to the ground. They said to them, "Why do you seek the living one among the dead?
6
He is not here, but he has been raised. 2 Remember what he said to you while he was still in Galilee,
7
that the Son of Man must be handed over to sinners and be crucified, and rise on the third day."
8
And they remembered his words.
9
3 Then they returned from the tomb and announced all these things to the eleven and to all the others.
10
The women were Mary Magdalene, Joanna, and Mary the mother of James; the others who accompanied them also told this to the apostles,
11
but their story seemed like nonsense and they did not believe them.
12
4 But Peter got up and ran to the tomb, bent down, and saw the burial cloths alone; then he went home amazed at what had happened.

THE BIBLE

HEROD PERSECUTION OF THE CHRISTIAN
ANGELS FREED ST. PETER
ACTS 12:1-18

Acts
Chapter 12

1
1 About that time King Herod laid hands upon some members of the church to harm them.
2
He had James, the brother of John, 2 killed by the sword,
3
3 and when he saw that this was pleasing to the Jews he proceeded to arrest Peter also. (It was (the) feast of Unleavened Bread.)
4
He had him taken into custody and put in prison under the guard of four squads of four soldiers each. He intended to bring him before the people after Passover.
5
Peter thus was being kept in prison, but prayer by the church was fervently being made to God on his behalf.
6
On the very night before Herod was to bring him to trial, Peter, secured by double chains, was sleeping between two soldiers, while outside the door guards kept watch on the prison.
7
Suddenly the angel of the Lord stood by him and a light shone in the cell. He tapped Peter on the side and awakened him, saying, "Get up quickly." The chains fell from his wrists.
8
The angel said to him, "Put on your belt and your sandals." He did so. Then he said to him, "Put on your cloak and follow me."
9
So he followed him out, not realizing that what was happening through the angel was real; he thought he was seeing a vision.
10
They passed the first guard, then the second, and came to the iron gate leading out to the city, which opened for them by itself. They emerged and made their way down an alley, and suddenly the angel left him.
11
Then Peter recovered his senses and said, "Now I know for certain that (the) Lord sent his angel and rescued me from the hand of Herod and from all that the Jewish people had been expecting."
12
When he realized this, he went to the house of Mary, the mother of John who is called Mark, where there were many people gathered in prayer.
13
When he knocked on the gateway door, a maid named Rhoda came to answer it.
14
She was so overjoyed when she recognized Peter's voice that, instead of opening the gate, she ran in and announced that Peter was standing at the gate.
15
They told her, "You are out of your mind," but she insisted that it was so. But they kept saying, "It is his angel."
16
But Peter continued to knock, and when they opened it, they saw him and were astounded.
17
He motioned to them with his hand to be quiet and explained (to them) how the Lord had led him out of the prison, and said, "Report this to James 4 and the brothers." Then he left and went to another place.
18
At daybreak there was no small commotion among the soldiers over what had become of Peter.

PETER SPEECH
ACTS 10:34-43

Acts
Chapter 10

34
12 Then Peter proceeded to speak and said, 13 "In truth, I see that God shows no partiality.
35
Rather, in every nation whoever fears him and acts uprightly is acceptable to him.
36
14 15 You know the word (that) he sent to the Israelites as he proclaimed peace through Jesus Christ, who is Lord of all,
37
what has happened all over Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John preached,
38
how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth 16 with the holy Spirit and power. He went about doing good and healing all those oppressed by the devil, for God was with him.
39
We are witnesses 17 of all that he did both in the country of the Jews and (in) Jerusalem. They put him to death by hanging him on a tree.
40
This man God raised (on) the third day and granted that he be visible,
41
not to all the people, but to us, the witnesses chosen by God in advance, who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead.
42
He commissioned us to preach to the people and testify that he is the one appointed by God as judge of the living and the dead. 18
43
To him all the prophets bear witness, that everyone who believes in him will receive forgiveness of sins through his name."

THE BAPTISM OF CORNELIUS
THE BAPTISM OF GENTILES EXPLAINED
ACTS 10:44-49 11:1-18

Acts
Chapter 10

44
While Peter was still speaking these things, the holy Spirit fell upon all who were listening to the word. 19
45
The circumcised believers who had accompanied Peter were astounded that the gift of the holy Spirit should have been poured out on the Gentiles also,
46
for they could hear them speaking in tongues and glorifying God. Then Peter responded,
47
"Can anyone withhold the water for baptizing these people, who have received the holy Spirit even as we have?"
48
He ordered them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ.
49
Then they invited him to stay for a few days.

Acts
Chapter 11

1
1 Now the apostles and the brothers who were in Judea heard that the Gentiles too had accepted the word of God.
2
So when Peter went up to Jerusalem the circumcised believers confronted him,
3
saying, "You entered 2 the house of uncircumcised people and ate with them."
4
Peter began and explained it to them step by step, saying,
5
"I was at prayer in the city of Joppa when in a trance I had a vision, something resembling a large sheet coming down, lowered from the sky by its four corners, and it came to me.
6
Looking intently into it, I observed and saw the four-legged animals of the earth, the wild beasts, the reptiles, and the birds of the sky.
7
I also heard a voice say to me, 'Get up, Peter. Slaughter and eat.'
8
But I said, 'Certainly not, sir, because nothing profane or unclean has ever entered my mouth.'
9
But a second time a voice from heaven answered, 'What God has made clean, you are not to call profane.'
10
This happened three times, and then everything was drawn up again into the sky.
11
Just then three men appeared at the house where we were, who had been sent to me from Caesarea.
12
The Spirit told me to accompany them without discriminating. These six brothers 3 also went with me, and we entered the man's house.
13
He related to us how he had seen (the) angel standing in his house, saying, 'Send someone to Joppa and summon Simon, who is called Peter,
14
who will speak words to you by which you and all your household will be saved.'
15
As I began to speak, the holy Spirit fell upon them as it had upon us at the beginning,
16
and I remembered the word of the Lord, how he had said, 'John baptized with water but you will be baptized with the holy Spirit.'
17
If then God gave them the same gift he gave to us when we came to believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I to be able to hinder God?"
18
When they heard this, they stopped objecting and glorified God, saying, "God has then granted life-giving repentance to the Gentiles too."

MIRACLES OF GOD St. Peter's Escape From Prison

MIRACLES OF GOD
St. Peter's Escape From Prison

Mga Gawa 12:1-18 (Ang Salita ng Diyos)

Acts 12:1-18

King Herod was a wicked ruler. He was persecuting the Christians and even had the apostle James, John's brother, put to death. When he saw that the Jews were pleased about it, he had Peter arrested and put in prison.

He wanted to make sure Peter didn't escape, so he put guards in the prison to guard him. There were four rotating shifts of four guards each. It would seem there would be no way for Peter to leave the prison. Surely he would be put on trial the next day.

The church during this time was praying that God would take care of Peter. They wanted him to be back with them again.

Peter was asleep in the prison. There were chains on each of his wrists, and there was a guard on each side of him and more guards at the doorway.

However, nothing is too hard for God. Suddenly there was a bright light inside the prison, and an angel appeared. The angel struck Peter on the side to wake him and his chains fell off.

"Quick, get up!" he said. Peter followed the angel's instructions when he told him to put on his clothes and sandals. Then he told him to wrap his coat around him and follow him.

Peter obeyed though he didn't think it was really happening. He thought it was just a vision.

They passed by the first guard, then the second guard, and the guards didn't even see them. Were they asleep, or were they just blind to what was happening?

There was still one more barrier to his freedom. The iron gate that led to the city was in front of them, and then without anyone pushing on it, the gate swung open by itself.

They walked through the gate and went the length of one street. Then as suddenly as he had appeared, the angel left him.

Peter stood in the quiet stillness of the dark street. It dawned on him what had just happened. It wasn't a vision. It had really happened! God had delivered him from Herod and the terrible fate that the king had planned for him.

He must hurry to find his friends. He went to the home of Mary, John Mark's mother, where the church was gathered praying for him. He knocked at the outer entrance.

A servant girl named Rhoda went to answer the door. Peter spoke and Rhoda recognized his voice. She was so excited she didn't even open the door. She ran back to the others and said, "Peter is at the door!"

They thought she was out of her mind. How could it be Peter? Peter was in prison. "It must be his angel," they said. The Jews believed that everyone had a guardian angel, and this angel must be speaking with Peter's voice.

Peter kept on knocking. Finally they opened the door and they were so surprised to see Peter standing there. Did they not believe that God could answer their prayers for Peter's release?

Everyone started talking at one time. Peter held up his hand for them to be quiet, then he told them how God had sent an angel to deliver him.

He instructed them to tell James and the others about his release. This was probably James, the brother of Jesus since James, the apostle had already been killed by Herod. Peter left to go to another place.

What happened at the prison the next morning? They looked and looked for Peter and couldn't find him. The guards had been responsible for keeping him in prison, and if they failed in their duty, the penalty was death. Herod ordered that the four guards be executed.

As for Herod, not many days later Herod appeared on his throne and gave a speech. The people said, "This is the voice of a god, not of a man." Herod accepted their praise and did not give praise to God. Immediately an angel of the Lord struck him down, and he was eaten by worms and died.
