More ‘others-focused’ prayers, please—Tagle
An official of the local Church hierarchy has raised the alarm on the tendency of many to become too “individualistic” in their prayers, enjoining them to also think about the needs of their fellow faithful, especially this Lenten season.
In an interview over Church-run Radyo Veritas, Manila Archbishop Luís
Antonio G. Cardinal Tagle underscored the beauty of praying for others,
reminding Catholics the gesture is in keeping with what the Gospel
teaches.
“Why be so individualistic in our prayers, nothing to say to God but our own concerns?” he asked
While pleading God for help is not wrong in itself, the prelate cautioned against making one’s prayers too self-focused to the exclusion of others.
“What’s wrong is when our prayers become so full of ourselves that there is no longer room for others. Let’s ask ourselves: how often do I pray for my neighbor?” he said.
Tagle explained the reason why God rejects some petitions and grants others is because He knows the merely individualistic from the really altruistic.
“You have no money maybe because you keep asking God for money. Why not try praying so that others may be given the money or the job you yourself want. Before you know it, God has already blessed you with these things,” he shared.
According to Tagle, one way to make one’s prayer less self-centered and more others-focused is by backing the Church’s various programs like Alay Kapwa and the Fast2Feed program of Hapag-Asa, which aims to eradicate nationwide hunger and malnutrition among Filipino children.
In a recent pastoral letter, Manila Archbishop Luís Antonio G. Cardinal Tagle reminds the faithful that Ash Wednesday, the start of Lent, invites them to heed God’s call to “pray, fast, and do acts of charity.” (Raymond A. Sebastián/CBCP News)
