The Preeminice of Christ

The Preeminice of Christ ( His person and works )
Colossians 1:15-20

Colossians
Chapter 1
15
6 He is the image 7 of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation.
16
For in him 8 were created all things in heaven and on earth, the visible and the invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers; all things were created through him and for him.
17
He is before all things, and in him all things hold together.
18
He is the head of the body, the church. 9 He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in all things he himself might be preeminent.
19
For in him all the fullness 10 was pleased to dwell,
20
and through him to reconcile all things for him, making peace by the blood of his cross 11(through him), whether those on earth or those in heaven.

Jesus, compassionate High Priest
Hebrews 4:14-16 5:1-10

Hebrews
Chapter 4
14
1 Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast to our confession.
15
For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who has similarly been tested in every way, yet without sin.
16
So let us confidently approach the throne of grace to receive mercy and to find grace for timely help.

Hebrews
Chapter 5
1
1 2 Every high priest is taken from among men and made their representative before God, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins.
2
He is able to deal patiently 3 with the ignorant and erring, for he himself is beset by weakness
3
and so, for this reason, must make sin offerings for himself as well as for the people.
4
No one takes this honor upon himself but only when called by God, just as Aaron was.
5
In the same way, it was not Christ who glorified himself in becoming high priest, but rather the one who said to him: “You are my son; this day I have begotten you”;
6
just as he says in another place: 4 “You are a priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek.”
7
In the days when he was in the flesh, he offered prayers and supplications with loud cries and tears to the one who was able to save him from death, 5 and he was heard because of his reverence.
8
Son though he was, 6 he learned obedience from what he suffered;
9
and when he was made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him,
10
declared by God high priest according to the order of Melchizedek.

Jesus is superior than Moises
Hebrews 3:1-6

Hebrews
Chapter 3
1
1 Therefore, holy “brothers,” sharing in a heavenly calling, reflect on Jesus, the apostle and high priest of our confession,
2
who was faithful to the one who appointed him, just as Moses was “faithful in (all) his house.”
3
But he is worthy of more “glory” than Moses, as the founder of a house has more “honor” than the house itself.
4
Every house is founded by someone, but the founder of all is God.
5
Moses was “faithful in all his house” as a “servant” to testify to what would be spoken,
6
2 but Christ was faithful as a son placed over his house. We are his house, if (only) we hold fast to our confidence and pride in our hope.

Your Body is temple of God
1 Corinthians 16-17
1 Corinthians
Chapter 3

16
Do you not know that you are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwells in you?
17
If anyone destroys God’s temple, God will destroy that person; for the temple of God, which you are, is holy. 9

Unity and Variety
1 Corinthians 12:27-31

1 Corinthians
Chapter 12

27
5 Now you are Christ’s body, and individually parts of it.
28
Some people God has designated in the church to be, first, apostles; 6 second, prophets; third, teachers; then, mighty deeds; then, gifts of healing, assistance, administration, and varieties of tongues.
29
Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work mighty deeds?
30
Do all have gifts of healing? Do all speak in tongues? Do all interpret?
31
Strive eagerly for the greatest spiritual gifts. But I shall show you a still more excellent way.
