‘Occupy Wall Street’ movement reaches Manila

MANILA, Nov. 25, 2011— The movement similar to the “Occupy Wall Street” in New York City has reached the Philippines shores.

In Manila, it is convened by no less than a Catholic bishop who heads the Church’s social action arm.

Manila Auxiliary Bishop Broderick Pabillo said “Kilusang 99%” is a social reform movement which is about “making the poor the center of development and making the government accountable for the welfare of the majority.”

Christian Families, Signs of the Credibility of the Gospel

VATICAN CITY, 25 NOV 2011 (VIS) - A press conference was held this morning in the Holy See Press Office to present the plenary assembly of the Pontifical Council for the Family, which is to due to be held in the Vatican from 29 November to 1 December. This year's plenary coincides with the thirtieth anniversary of the Apostolic Exhortation "Familiaris consortio" and the creation of the pontifical council itself. Participating in today's conference were Cardinal Ennio Antonelli, Bishop Jean Laffitte, Msgr. Carlos Simon Vazquez and Fr. Gianfranco Grieco O.F.M. Conv., respectively president, secretary, under secretary and bureau chief of the Pontifical Council for the Family, and Alfonso and Francesca Colzani, directors of family services for the archdiocese of Milan, Italy.

Cardinal Antonelli focused on certain themes contained in "Familiaris consortio", such as the central role of the family in the new evangelisation and in pastoral care in parishes and dioceses. He also highlighted the missionary vocation of the family "to live, irradiate and express to the world the love and presence of Christ; ... to become a great sign of the credibility of the Gospel through mutual service, generous and responsible procreation, care of children, commitment to work, concern for the poor and needy, prayer in the home, participation in Mass and Church activities, and involvement in civil society".

God Power for Salvations /  Punishment to Idolators
ROME 1:16-17  1:22     1:28-32

Romans
Chapter 1

16
10 For I am not ashamed of the gospel. It is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes: for Jew first, and then Greek.
17
For in it is revealed the righteousness of God from faith to faith; 11 as it is written, "The one who is righteous by faith will live."
22
While claiming to be wise, they became fools
28
And since they did not see fit to acknowledge God, God handed them over to their undiscerning mind to do what is improper.
29
They are filled with every form of wickedness, evil, greed, and malice; full of envy, murder, rivalry, treachery, and spite. They are gossips
30
and scandalmongers and they hate God. They are insolent, haughty, boastful, ingenious in their wickedness, and rebellious toward their parents.
31
They are senseless, faithless, heartless, ruthless.
32
Although they know the just decree of God that all who practice such things deserve death, they not only do them but give approval to those who practice them.

New beginning in Zion and David / A Hymn of Thanksgiving for Gods fidelity
Psalm 78:65-72  /  80:1-4  /  76:12-13  /  92:1-5

God of Universe / The Divine Ruler of All
Psalm 96:1-13  97:10-12

The Good Shepherd
John 10:1-19

Psalms
Chapter 78
New beginning in Zion and David
65
Then the Lord awoke as from sleep, like a warrior from the effects of wine.
66
He put his enemies to flight; everlasting shame he dealt them.
67
He rejected the tent of Joseph, chose not the tribe of Ephraim.
68
10 God chose the tribe of Judah, Mount Zion which he favored.
69
He built his shrine like the heavens, like the earth which he founded forever.
70
He chose David his servant, took him from the sheepfold.
71
From tending sheep God brought him, to shepherd Jacob, his people, Israel, his heritage.
72
He shepherded them with a pure heart; with skilled hands he guided them.

Psalms
Chapter 80

1
1 2 For the leader; according to "Lilies." Eduth. A psalm of Asaph.
2
Shepherd of Israel, listen, guide of the flock of Joseph! From your throne upon the cherubim reveal yourself
3
to Ephraim, Benjamin, and Manasseh. Stir up your power, come to save us.
4
O LORD of hosts, restore us; Let your face shine upon us, that we may be saved.

Psalms
Chapter 76

12
Make and keep vows to the LORD your God. May all present bring gifts to this awesome God,
13
Who checks the pride of princes, inspires awe among the kings of earth.

Psalms
Chapter 92

1
1 A psalm. A sabbath song.
2
It is good to give thanks to the LORD, to sing praise to your name, Most High,
3
To proclaim your love in the morning, your faithfulness in the night,
4
With the ten-stringed harp, with melody upon the lyre.
5
For you make me jubilant, LORD, by your deeds; at the works of your hands I shout for joy.

Psalms
Chapter 96

1
1 Sing to the LORD a new song; sing to the LORD, all the earth.
2
Sing to the LORD, bless his name; announce his salvation day after day.
3
Tell God's glory among the nations; among all peoples, God's marvelous deeds.
4
2 For great is the LORD and highly to be praised, to be feared above all gods.
5
For the gods of the nations all do nothing, but the LORD made the heavens.
6
Splendor and power go before him; power and grandeur are in his holy place.
7
Give to the LORD, you families of nations, give to the LORD glory and might;
8
give to the LORD the glory due his name! Bring gifts and enter his courts;
9
bow down to the LORD, splendid in holiness. Tremble before God, all the earth;
10
say among the nations: The LORD is king. The world will surely stand fast, never to be moved. God rules the peoples with fairness.
11
Let the heavens be glad and the earth rejoice; let the sea and what fills it resound;
12
let the plains be joyful and all that is in them. Then let all the trees of the forest rejoice
13
before the LORD who comes, who comes to govern the earth, To govern the world with justice and the peoples with faithfulness.

Psalms
Chapter 97

10
The LORD loves those who hate evil, protects the lives of the faithful, rescues them from the hand of the wicked.
11
Light dawns for the just; gladness, for the honest of heart.
12
Rejoice in the LORD, you just, and praise his holy name.

John
Chapter 10

The Good Shepherd

1
1 2 "Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever does not enter a sheepfold through the gate but climbs over elsewhere is a thief and a robber.
2
But whoever enters through the gate is the shepherd of the sheep.
3
The gatekeeper opens it for him, and the sheep hear his voice, as he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out.
4
3 When he has driven out all his own, he walks ahead of them, and the sheep follow him, because they recognize his voice.
5
But they will not follow a stranger; they will run away from him, because they do not recognize the voice of strangers."
6
Although Jesus used this figure of speech, 4 they did not realize what he was trying to tell them.
7
5 So Jesus said again, "Amen, amen, I say to you, I am the gate for the sheep.
8
6 All who came [before me] are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not listen to them.
9
I am the gate. Whoever enters through me will be saved, and will come in and go out and find pasture.
10
A thief comes only to steal and slaughter and destroy; I came so that they might have life and have it more abundantly.
11
I am the good shepherd. A good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.
12
A hired man, who is not a shepherd and whose sheep are not his own, sees a wolf coming and leaves the sheep and runs away, and the wolf catches and scatters them.
13
This is because he works for pay and has no concern for the sheep.
14
I am the good shepherd, and I know mine and mine know me,
15
just as the Father knows me and I know the Father; and I will lay down my life for the sheep.
16
I have other sheep 7 that do not belong to this fold. These also I must lead, and they will hear my voice, and there will be one flock, one shepherd.
17
This is why the Father loves me, because I lay down my life in order to take it up again.
18
No one takes it from me, but I lay it down on my own. I have power to lay it down, and power to take it up again. 8 This command I have received from my Father."
19
Again there was a division among the Jews because of these words.

Religious leaders on political will for peace in Holy Land

2011-11-12 Vatican Radio

Religious leaders in the Holy Land refuse to be discouraged by the current climate of pessimism that shrouds the Middle East peace process. Though they admit there are very real obstacles to overcoming hostilities, they believe that as the spiritual leaders of the communities involved, they can make a difference. It’s a question, they say, of the political will to involve them in dialogue:

“I hope the voice of the Council will be heard more, even on a political level. We try to address both the Israeli and Palestinians. Right now, we don’t have great links with the authorities mainly in Israel. But I do think they need to listen to us, we are working for peace. We hope we can work more together in the future. The Palestinian Authority are very supportive and encouraging. The situation is far from hopeful at the moment but this just means that we have to work even harder” says the Anglican Archbishop of Jerusalem, Suheil Dawani, who is a member of the Israeli Council of Religious leaders who met Thursday morning with the Pope.

He says. “This Council was founded four years ago in Jerusalem. It is composed of Christian, Muslim and Jewish representatives. Of course the five heads of the Churches, the Muslims and the Jewish Rabbinate, we meet every other month and recently we have been working on a peace education curriculum, which we hope will be accepted in both Israeli and Palestinian schools.

I believe that peace will start only from the grass roots, the people. I mean, we must teach our children how to live together and respect each other. There is a great ignorance in the lives of the children and young people. They don’t know each other, they don’t know their neighbours and I believe that this is the our most important task for future generations

Listen to Philippa Hitchen’s full interview with Archbishop Dawani: 00:05:39:02
Below the full text of the Statement of the Council of Religious Leaders in Israel

On the occasion of meeting H.H. Pope Benedict XVI, this tenth day of November 2011, we the religious leaders in the State of Israel affirm our belief in the Creator of the Universe who directs His world with loving kindness and compassion and who calls upon us human beings to live with one another in peace and dignity.

The Council of Religious Leaders express gratitude to His Holiness for this outstanding meeting, and holds in esteem His activity to bring hearts together and to bring peace throughout the world.

First and foremost, we reiterate our commitment to the sanctity of human life and reject all violence, especially when this is done in the name of religion - a desecration of the sacred.

In order to maintain peace and mutual respect among the different religious communities in our State, we must educate our children and congregations accordingly and prevent any offense against the feelings or beliefs of others.

We inherited the Holy Sites from our forebears, and we are required to preserve their religious sanctity and cultural significance. We do this, also in the name of Israeli Law related to the protection of the Holy Sites. The unity and special character of the Holy Sites must be protected from all violence and desecration. It is the responsibility of the religious leaders to strengthen this approach and to call on their communities to ensure that the Holy Sites of other religious communities are not harmed.

In accordance with the above, and in keeping with the commandments and prohibitions of each respective religion, free access for believers to their respective holy sites must be provided, and the empowered civil authorities must guarantee this.

Our religious heritages teach us that peace, doing justice, and righteousness are the commandments of the Holy One Blessed Be He, and as religious leaders, we have a special duty to be attentive to the cry of the weak in our midst and to work together for a more just and fair society.

We reiterate our commitment to do everything in our power to fulfill this important charge, especially in the Holy Land, which is dear to us all.

Offering our prayer heavenwards, we give thanks to the Creator, who has enabled us to come together this day in order to work together to bring a blessing for all.

Unemployment Undermines Human Dignity

VATICAN CITY, 10 NOV 2011 (VIS) - Made public this morning was a Message from the Holy Father to Archbishop Antonio Arregui Yarza of Guayaquil and president of the Ecuadorian Episcopal Conference, for the second Ecuadorian National Family Congress, which began yesterday and is due to close on 12 November. The congress, which has as its theme "The Ecuadorian Family on Mission: work and rest at the service of the individual and of the common good" is taking place in the context of the Continental Mission promoted by the Episcopate of Latin America and the Caribbean, and in preparation for the seventh World Meeting of Families, due to be held in Milan, Italy, in June 2012.

"The family", writes Benedict XVI, "born of a covenant of love and of complete and sincere commitment between a man and woman in marriage, is not a private entity enclosed in itself. By its vocation it makes a wonderful and decisive contribution to the common good of society and the mission of the Church. Society is not a mere aggregation of individuals, but the outcome of relationships between people - husband and wife, parents and children, siblings - the foundation of which is to be found in family life and in the bonds of affection deriving therefrom. Each family, through its children, gives society its own experience of human richness. We can well say that the health and value of relationships within a society depend upon the health and value of relationships within families".
"Work and rest are particularly associated with the life of families: they affect the choices families make, influence relations between spouses and among parents and children, and affect the ties of families with society and with the Church".

"Through work man comes to see himself as a participant in God's plan of creation. This is why unemployment or precarious work undermine man's dignity, creating not just situations of injustice and poverty which frequently degenerate into desperation, criminality and violence, but also crises of identity. It is, then, vital that serious, effective and judicious measures be taken on all sides, accompanied by an indissoluble and forthright will to find ways to ensure that everyone has access to dignified, stable and well paid employment, through which they may seek sanctity and participate actively in the development of society, combining intense and responsible labour with adequate time for a rich, fruitful and harmonious family life".

"A serene and constructive home environment, with its duties and its affections, is the first school of work and the best place in which a person may discover his potential, nurture his ambitions, and foster his most noble aspirations. Moreover, family life teaches us to overcome selfishness, to nourish solidarity, not to disdain sacrifice for another's happiness, to value what is good and true, and to apply ourselves with conviction and generosity in the name of our joint wellbeing and reciprocal good, showing responsibility towards ourselves, others and the environment".

"Rest makes our time more human, opening it to the encounter with God, with others and with nature. For this reason families need to rediscover the genuine significance of rest, and especially of Sunday, the Day of God and man. In the Sunday celebration of the Eucharist, families experience the real presence of the Risen Lord in the here and now, they receive new life, welcome the gift of the Spirit, increase their love for the Church, listen to the Divine Word, share the Eucharistic bread and open to fraternal love".

Urban poor presses for just minimum wage

Urban poor presses for just minimum wage

ANTIPOLO City, Nov. 12, 2011—Urban poor alliance, Kalipunan ng Damayang Mahihirap (Kadamay) pressed for a fair minimum wage for workers as economic pressure is now taking its toll to the ordinary people’s lives.

Kadamay honorary chairperson Carmen “Nanay Mameng” Deunida in a press statement said, the current P404 (US$9.32, based on the prevailing peso-dollar exchange rate) minimum wage cannot sustain a family.

“The additional P22 cost of living allowance cannot protect our workers from the effects of price hikes of basic commodities, especially those who have contractual and casual employment,” Deunida said.

Kadamay said that they are supporting the pending bill in Congress that pushes for a P125 ($2.88) increase on the minimum wage of all workers in the country.

In addition to the increase on the minimum wage, the group also pressed of scrapping of the contractual and flexible labor policies being implemented in the country.
Based on the current statistics, around 70 percent of the total Philippine workforce are employed through contracts.

Deunida assailed the Department of Labor and Employment for allegedly conniving with huge companies, both foreign and local, for endorsing contractual and flexible labor in the Philippines, as proven by DOLE Order No. 18-02.

“The said order has even taught the capitalist on how to implement contractualization through different deceptive measures, and has resulted to the gradual liquidation of unions of workers,” Deunida explained.

Nevertheless, a genuine land reform could also be the key for a successful poverty alleviation program, said Deunida.

“Unless the Aquino administration implements genuine agrarian reform and national industrialization program, it cannot solve the problem of urban poverty caused by urban migration, and abusive employment system that follow the dictates of neoliberal policies,” she said. [Noel Sales Barcelona]

Human rights groups pay tribute to environmental martyrs

MANILA, Nov. 12, 2011―Church and human rights organizations paid tribute to martyrs who lost their lives protecting rural communities and the environment in a prayer and candle-lighting ceremony held in various key cities nationwide.

The activity was part of the observance of the Global Day of Remembrance of the Heroes, Heroines and Martyrs of the Resistance against Mining, Oil and Gas on November 10.
In Manila, around 100 human rights advocates gathered at the Pope Pius XII Center in UN Avenue, to pay honor their fallen comrades in prayer and songs.

Church groups and human rights organizations delivered solidarity messages and urged for the repeal of Mining Act of 1995 and the enactment of an Alternative Mining Bill.
Simultaneous with the activity in Manila was a prayer gathering in Palawan, Cebu and another in Cagayan de Oro that drew more than 30 participants from human rights groups, civil society and government.

Human rights advocate Judy Pasimio from Legal Rights and Natural Resources Center – Kasama sa Kalikasan (LRC-KsK) urged for justice for killed environmental martyrs.
“We seek justice for these martyrs. People and the government must bring their assailants to justice, for true peace to be achieved,” she said.

“The Philippine government must not put the interests of the mining companies over the welfare of the community and the whole nation, by serving the greed of these large mining transnational corporations,” she added.

Human rights groups had earlier criticized the Aquino government’s decision to allow mining companies to form militias to defend its interests from rebels’ attacks.

Pasimio said Aquino’s decision to permit mining corporations to have its own paramilitary units can be construed that “he is for mining and against those who opposed it.”
She lamented that mining has become “synonymous to violence” as many advocates have lost their lives because of their anti-mining stance.

Italian priest Fr. Fausto Tentorio was the latest of a string of environmentalists who were killed this year, when he was gunned down in Cotabato last month. Another outspoken anti-mining activist, Datu Roy Gallego, was also killed in Surigao del Sur last October 14.
Early this year, Dr. Gerry Ortega, a broadcaster and anti-mining advocate, was killed in Puerto Princesa.

Other documented killings related to mining include Councilor Armin Rios Marin from Sibuyan Island who was killed by a mining security guard last 2007 right in front of a rally against mining; Gensun Agustin from Cagayan Valley, gunned down in a highway last 2009, on his way from an anti-mining forum he organized; and Rudy Segovia, shot and killed at a barricade set-up in Zamboanga del Norte to prevent the entry of mining equipment in their ancestral domains.

The tribute to environmental heroes was part of the global solidarity actions organized in Nigeria, Indonesia, Guatemala and Australia to mark the anniversary of the murder of Nigerian writer Ken Saro-Wiwa. Together with eight other Ogoni leaders, Saro-Wiwa was executed in 1995 for speaking out against the impact of Shell and other oil companies in the Niger Delta. (CBCPNews)

NICODEMUS / Cleansing of the Temple
John 3:16-21

John
Chapter 2

13
10 11 Since the Passover of the Jews was near, Jesus went up to Jerusalem.
14
12 He found in the temple area those who sold oxen, sheep, and doves, 13 as well as the money-changers seated there.
15
He made a whip out of cords and drove them all out of the temple area, with the sheep and oxen, and spilled the coins of the money-changers and overturned their tables,
16
and to those who sold doves he said, "Take these out of here, and stop making my Father's house a marketplace."
17
14 His disciples recalled the words of scripture, "Zeal for your house will consume me."
18
At this the Jews answered and said to him, "What sign can you show us for doing this?"
19
Jesus answered and said to them, 15 "Destroy this temple and in three days I will raise it up."
20
The Jews said, "This temple has been under construction for forty-six years, 16 and you will raise it up in three days?"
21
But he was speaking about the temple of his body.
22
Therefore, when he was raised from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this, and they came to believe the scripture and the word Jesus had spoken.

John

Chapter 3

16
For God so loved the world that he gave 7 his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life.
17
For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn 8 the world, but that the world might be saved through him.
18
Whoever believes in him will not be condemned, but whoever does not believe has already been condemned, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.
19
9 And this is the verdict, that the light came into the world, but people preferred darkness to light, because their works were evil.
20
For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come toward the light, so that his works might not be exposed.
21
But whoever lives the truth comes to the light, so that his works may be clearly seen as done in God.
