Chapter 4

- 7 He came to Nazareth, where he had grown up, and went according to his custom 8 into the synagogue on the sabbath day. He stood up to read

- and was handed a scroll of the prophet Isaiah. He unrolled the scroll and found the passage where it was written:

- "The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, 9 because he has anointed me to bring glad tidings to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free,
- 19
- and to proclaim a year acceptable to the Lord."

- Rolling up the scroll, he handed it back to the attendant and sat down, and the eyes of all in the synagogue looked intently at him.
- 18 At daybreak, Jesus left and went to a deserted place. The crowds went looking for him, and when they came to him, they tried to prevent him from leaving them.

- But he said to them, "To the other towns also I must proclaim the good news of the kingdom of God, because for this purpose I have been sent."

- And he told them a parable, "Can a blind person guide a blind person? Will not both fall into a pit?

- No disciple is superior to the teacher; but when fully trained, every disciple will be like his teacher.

- "Why do you call me, 'Lord, Lord,' but not do what I command?

- 15 I will show you what someone is like who comes to me, listens to my words, and acts on them.

- That one is like a person building a house, who dug deeply and laid the foundation on rock; when the flood came, the river burst against that house but could not shake it because it had been well built.

- But the one who listens and does not act is like a person who built a house on the ground without a foundation. When the river burst against it, it collapsed at once and was completely destroyed."

- 6 Asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God would come, he said in reply, "The coming of the kingdom of God cannot be observed,

- 7 and no one will announce, 'Look, here it is,' or, 'There it is.' For behold, the kingdom of God is among you."
