MANILA,
June 1, 2013—The high tribunal yesterday issued a notice between
government lawyers and the petitioners against the controversial
Republic Act (RA) 10354 to work out which issues to be tackled in the
oral arguments set for June 18.Counsels on both sides according to the notice were told to be present for the preliminary conference at 2:00 pm at the Justices’ Lounge 7th floor of the New Supreme Court Building (Annex), Padre Faura St., Ermita, Manila. The notice also adds that participation on the June 18 oral arguments is set to be registered on the preliminary conference, “the necessary manifestation in Court should you desire to waive your right to participate in the scheduled oral arguments on June 18.” As of today, there are eleven petitions against the RH law pending before the Supreme Court the latest of which was filed by students John Walter Juat, Mary Imbong, Joseph Martin Verdejo, Anthony Victorio Lumicao, Lota Lat-Guerrero, and Antonio Emma Roxas. Petitioner John Walter Juat stressed better use for the RH law funding instead of targeting the ‘poor and marginalized’. “To put it simply, there’s a better use of money than the government imposing contraceptive programs targeted on the poor and marginalized.” Juat said. During the May 29 press conference of the Women Deliver Conference 2013, delegates from various countries that advocate abortion, contraception and population control applauded Department of Health secretary Dr. Enrique T. Ona for his presentation remarks. “It (RH law) became mandatory to make sure that the program is expanded and to make sure it is directed to those our so called poor and marginalized women,” said Ona. According to a reliable source who requested anonymity another petitioner is set to file a petition against the RH law which is scheduled next week.
