Rights advocates want stronger church response to summary executions

MANILA, July 14, 2016— A human rights watchdog called on religious leaders to a stronger stand against vigilantism and extrajudicial killings in the country.
The Citizen Council on Human Rights (CCHR) urged church leaders to be unambiguous in its condemnation of violence amid a surge in the killings of suspected drug users, pushers and other criminals.

The group maintained that killing suspected criminals without due process was not just.

Danica Duno of the Youth for Human Rights said that churches and schools must take a stronger action and leadership to protect human rights.

“Many suspected criminals are being killed without due process. That’s not right. That’s why churches and schools must teach that killing is immoral,” Duno said during a press conference in Quezon City.

She added that the problem is not against the fight against crime but “the process of executing the campaign.”

The CCHR also asked President Rodrigo Duterte to break the cycle of human rights violations and not compound them.

The government, it said, must initiate measures that will stop the increasing death toll of suspected drug offenders in supposed shootouts with the police and “vigilante-style” killings. (Glenn Figuracion/CBCPNews)
