Chapter 1:26-38
Announcement of the Birth of Jesus
26 In the sixth month, the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a town of Galilee called Nazareth,
27 to a virgin betrothed to a man named Joseph, of the house of David, and the virgin’s name was Mary.
28 And coming to her, he said, “Hail, favored one! The Lord is with you.”
29 But she was greatly troubled at what was said and pondered what sort of greeting this might be.
30 Then the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God.
31 Behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall name him Jesus.
32 He will be great and will be called Son of the Most High,* and the Lord God will give him the throne of David his father,
33and he will rule over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.”
34 But Mary said to the angel, “How can this be, since I have no relations with a man?”
35 And the angel said to her in reply, “The holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. Therefore the child to be born will be called holy, the Son of God.
36 And behold, Elizabeth, your relative, has also conceived a son in her old age, and this is the sixth month for her who was called barren;
37for nothing will be impossible for God.
38 Mary said, “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word.” Then the angel departed from her.
Luke
Chapter 2:1-14
The Birth of Jesus
28bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you.
29To the person who strikes you on one cheek, offer the other one as well, and from the person who takes your cloak, do not withhold even your tunic.
30Give to everyone who asks of you, and from the one who takes what is yours do not demand it back.
31Do to others as you would have them do to you.
32For if you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners love those who love them.
33And if you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners do the same.
34If you lend money to those from whom you expect repayment, what credit [is] that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, and get back the same amount.
35But rather, love your enemies and do good to them, and lend expecting nothing back; then your reward will be great and you will be children of the Most High, for he himself is kind to the ungrateful and the wicked.
36Be merciful, just as [also] your Father is merciful.
29 But because he wished to justify himself, he said to Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?”
30 Jesus replied, “A man fell victim to robbers as he went down from Jerusalem to Jericho. They stripped and beat him and went off leaving him half-dead.
31 A priest happened to be going down that road, but when he saw him, he passed by on the opposite side.
32 Likewise a Levite came to the place, and when he saw him, he passed by on the opposite side.
33But a Samaritan traveler who came upon him was moved with compassion at the sight.
34He approached the victim, poured oil and wine over his wounds and bandaged them. Then he lifted him up on his own animal, took him to an inn and cared for him.
35The next day he took out two silver coins and gave them to the innkeeper with the instruction, ‘Take care of him. If you spend more than what I have given you, I shall repay you on my way back.’
36Which of these three, in your opinion, was neighbor to the robbers’ victim?”
37He answered, “The one who treated him with mercy.” Jesus said to him, “Go and do likewise.”

Chapter 2:1-14
The Birth of Jesus
1 In those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that the whole world should be enrolled.
2This was the first enrollment, when Quirinius was governor of Syria.
3So all went to be enrolled, each to his own town.
4And Joseph too went up from Galilee from the town of Nazareth to Judea, to the city of David that is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and family of David,
5to be enrolled with Mary, his betrothed, who was with child.
6While they were there, the time came for her to have her child,
7and she gave birth to her firstborn son. She wrapped him in swaddling clothes and laid him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.
8 Now there were shepherds in that region living in the fields and keeping the night watch over their flock.
9The angel of the Lord appeared to them and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were struck with great fear.
10The angel said to them, “Do not be afraid; for behold, I proclaim to you good news of great joy that will be for all the people.
11 For today in the city of David a savior has been born for you who is Messiah and Lord.
12And this will be a sign for you: you will find an infant wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a manger.”
13And suddenly there was a multitude of the heavenly host with the angel, praising God and saying:
14 “Glory to God in the highest
and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.”

Chapter 8:12-20
The Light of the World
12 Jesus spoke to them again,
saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk
in darkness, but will have the light of life.
13 So the Pharisees said to him, “You testify on your own behalf, so your testimony cannot be verified.
14 Jesus answered and said to them, “Even if I do testify on my own behalf, my testimony can be verified,* because I know where I came from and where I am going. But you do not know where I come from or where I am going.
15 You judge by appearances, but I do not judge anyone.
16 And even if I should judge, my judgment is valid, because I am not alone, but it is I and the Father who sent me.
17 Even in your law it is written that the testimony of two men can be verified.
18 testify on my behalf and so does the Father who sent me.”
19 So they said to him, “Where is your father?” Jesus answered, “You know neither me nor my Father. If you knew me, you would know my Father also.”
20 He spoke these words while teaching in the treasury in the temple area. But no one arrested him, because his hour had not yet come.

13 But we ought to give thanks to God for you always,
brothers loved by the Lord, because God chose you as the firstfruits for
salvation through sanctification by the Spirit and belief in truth.
14 To this end he has [also] called you through our gospel to possess the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.
15 Therefore, brothers, stand firm and hold fast to the traditions that you were taught, either by an oral statement or by a letter of ours.

Trust in God Alone
6My soul, be at rest in God alone,
from whom comes my hope.
7God alone is my rock and my salvation,

17Sa
