Matthew
Chapter 24:3-14
The Beginning of Calamities
3As he was sitting on the Mount of Olives,* the disciples approached him privately and said, “Tell us, when will this happen, and what sign will there be of your coming, and of the end of the age?”
4* Jesus said to them in reply, “See that no one deceives you.
5For many will come in my name, saying, ‘I am the Messiah,’ and they will deceive many.
6 You will hear of wars*and reports of wars; see that you are not alarmed, for these things must happen, but it will not yet be the end.
7 Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom; there will be famines and earthquakes from place to place.
8 All these are the beginning of the labor pains.
9 Then they will hand you over to persecution, and they will kill you. You will be hated by all nations because of my name.
10And then many will be led into sin; they will betray and hate one another.
11Many false prophets will arise and deceive many;
12and because of the increase of evildoing, the love of many will grow cold.
13 But the one who perseveres to the end will be saved.
14 And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached throughout the world as a witness to all nations,* and then the end will come.
2People will be
self-centered and lovers of money, proud, haughty, abusive, disobedient
to their parents, ungrateful, irreligious,
3callous, implacable, slanderous, licentious, brutal, hating what is good,
4traitors, reckless, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God,
5as they make a pretense of religion but deny its power. Reject them.
6For some of these slip into homes and make captives of women weighed down by sins, led by various desires,
7always trying to learn but never able to reach a knowledge of the truth.
8Just as Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses, so they also oppose the truth—people of depraved mind, unqualified in the faith.
9But they will not make further progress, for their foolishness will be plain to all, as it was with those two.
Matthew
Chapter 6:24-34
God and MoneyDependence on God
25
“Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat
[or drink], or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more
than food and the body more than clothing?
26Look at the birds in the sky; they do not sow or reap, they gather nothing into barns, yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are not you more important than they?
27Can any of you by worrying add a single moment to your life-span?
28Why are you anxious about clothes? Learn from the way the wild flowers grow. They do not work or spin.
29But I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was clothed like one of them.
30* If God so clothes the grass of the field, which grows today and is thrown into the oven tomorrow, will he not much more provide for you, O you of little faith?
31So do not worry and say, ‘What are we to eat?’ or ‘What are we to drink?’ or ‘What are we to wear?’
32All these things the pagans seek. Your heavenly Father knows that you need them all.
33But seek first the kingdom [of God] and his righteousness, and all these things will be given you besides.
34Do not worry about tomorrow; tomorrow will take care of itself. Sufficient for a day is its own evil.
Matthew
Chapter 3:1-12
The Preaching of John the Baptist
2[and] saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand!”
3 It was of him that the prophet Isaiah had spoken when he said:
“A voice of one crying out in the desert,
‘Prepare the way of the Lord,
make straight his paths.’”
4 John wore clothing made of camel’s hair and had a leather belt around his waist. His food was locusts and wild honey.
5At that time Jerusalem, all Judea, and the whole region around the Jordan were going out to him
6and were being baptized by him in the Jordan River as they acknowledged their sins.
7When he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to his baptism, he said to them, “You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath?
8Produce good fruit as evidence of your repentance.
9And do not presume to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’ For I tell you, God can raise up children to Abraham from these stones.
10Even now the ax lies at the root of the trees. Therefore every tree that does not bear good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.
11 I am baptizing you with water, for repentance, but the one who is coming after me is mightier than I. I am not worthy to carry his sandals. He will baptize you with the holy Spirit and fire.
12 His winnowing fan is in his hand. He will clear his threshing floor and gather his wheat into his barn, but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire.”

2 Thessalonians
Chapter 2:1-17
Christ and the Lawless One
1We ask you, brothers, with regard to the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our assembling with him,
2not to be shaken out of your minds suddenly, or to be alarmed either by a “spirit,” or by an oral statement, or by a letter allegedly from us to the effect that the day of the Lord is at hand.
3Let no one deceive you in any way. For unless the apostasy comes first and the lawless one is revealed, the one doomed to perdition,
4 who opposes and exalts himself above every so-called god and object of worship, so as to seat himself in the temple of God, claiming that he is a god—
5do you not recall that while I was still with you I told you these things?
6And now you know what is restraining, that he may be revealed in his time.
7 For the mystery of lawlessness is already at work. But the one who restrains is to do so only for the present, until he is removed from the scene.
8And then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord [Jesus] will kill with the breath of his mouth and render powerless by the manifestation of his coming,
9the one whose coming springs from the power of Satan in every mighty deed and in signs and wonders that lie,
10and in every wicked deceit for those who are perishing because they have not accepted the love of truth so that they may be saved.
11Therefore, God is sending them a deceiving power so that they may believe the lie,
12that all who have not believed the truth but have approved wrongdoing may be condemned.
13But we ought to give thanks to God for you always, brothers loved by the Lord, because God chose you as the firstfruits for salvation through sanctification by the Spirit and belief in truth.
14To this end he has [also] called you through our gospel to possess the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.
15Therefore, brothers, stand firm and hold fast to the traditions that you were taught, either by an oral statement or by a letter of ours.
16May our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father, who has loved us and given us everlasting encouragement and good hope through his grace,
17encourage your hearts and strengthen them in every good deed and word.
2not to be shaken out of your minds suddenly, or to be alarmed either by a “spirit,” or by an oral statement, or by a letter allegedly from us to the effect that the day of the Lord is at hand.

Various Counsels
but those who keep instruction oppose them.
5The evil understand nothing of justice,
but those who seek the LORD understand everything.
6Better to be poor and walk in integrity
than rich and crooked in one’s ways.
but those who seek the LORD understand everything.
6Better to be poor and walk in integrity
than rich and crooked in one’s ways.

17Sa
