CBCP head calls on faithful to embrace Jubilee Year for renewal, reform

The head of the Catholic bishops’ leadership urged the faithful to embrace the Jubilee Year as an opportunity for spiritual renewal and structural reform within the Church.

“Let us not waste the grace of the Jubilee,” said Cardinal Pablo Virgilio David of Kalookan, president of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP).

He emphasized that the Holy Year invites all believers to renew their commitment to faith and the mission of the Church.

“Let us not lose the impetus to spiritual renewal and structural reform initiated by the Synod on Synodality,” he urged.

David highlighted the need for unity and collaboration, calling on Catholics to broaden their mission efforts and explore new avenues for the exchange of gifts and cooperation within the Church.

The cardinal also urged Filipinos to live as “witnesses of hope” in a divided and troubled world, emphasizing that hope has the power to transform one’s perspective.

He encouraged the faithful to drink from the “spring of living water” that unites and nourishes humanity.

“We are pilgrims of hope,” David said, highlighting the importance of walking together in faith as a community. “We are summoned to move forward together, in synodality.”

The cardinal encouraged the faithful to follow the guidance of the Synod on Synodality, a process designed to foster unity and collaboration within the Church.

“We find new pathways for the conversion of processes in our collective discernment and decision-making,” David said.

The cardinal also used the symbol of the boat, featured in the Jubilee Year logo, to describe the Church’s journey—navigating challenges with the cross as an anchor.

“We are on the same boat, called to conversion of relationships,” he said, stressing the need for greater transparency, accountability, and trust within the Church.

“We adjust our structures so we can be more transparent and accountable, more participatory and empowering. We learn to trust each other and listen to each other,” he added.

Pope Francis opens the Holy Door of St. Peter’s Basilica at the Vatican on Dec. 24 to mark the opening of the Catholic Church’s Jubilee Year.

However, opening Masses for the Jubilee are to be celebrated in cathedrals around the world, especially on Sunday, December 29.

David earlier said these churches will serve as places of pilgrimage for a “time of spiritual renewal and grace for the universal Church.”

“These sacred sites will offer the faithful an opportunity for deeper reflection, conversion, and the experience of God’s infinite mercy,” he said.

A Jubilee Year, traditionally proclaimed by the Universal Church every 25 years, is a special time set aside to encourage the faithful to embark on pilgrimages, repent of their sins, forgive others, and renew their focus on spiritual life. The “Jubilee of Hope” will run through Jan. 6, 2026, the Feast of the Epiphany.
