Family is key to building a synodal Church, says CBCP head
Families are at the heart of building a synodal Church, the head of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines said Saturday, calling on parents and children to listen, pray, and discern together.
Speaking at the closing Mass of the National Conference on Family and Life in Butuan City on Feb. 21, Archbishop Gilbert Garcera said synodality extends beyond Church structures to everyday family relationships.
“In the family, synodality begins at the table — when parents and children truly listen to one another,” Garcera told delegates gathered in Butuan City.
“It grows when spouses pray together and discern together,” he said. “The family is the first school of participation and co-responsibility.”
Garcera warned that modern pressures, from material concerns to daily distractions, can weaken communication and relationships, and he described listening as a spiritual and social responsibility that strengthens unity and deepens faith.
Without authentic dialogue, he said, synodality risks becoming “just another project,” detached from the lived realities of families.
He urged Church workers to support programs that nurture prayer, discernment and mutual understanding, and said conversion is required not only from clergy and Church institutions but also from families facing daily tensions.
“Let us not be afraid of the desert experience,” Garcera said, describing difficulties as opportunities for clarity, renewal and deeper commitment to a shared mission.
