Chapter 2
CHRISTIAN AND THE HOSTILE WORLD
- 11
- 6 Beloved, I urge you as aliens and sojourners 7 to keep away from worldly desires that wage war against the soul.
- 12
- Maintain good conduct among the Gentiles, so that if they speak of you as evildoers, they may observe your good works and glorify God on the day of visitation.
- 13
- 8 Be subject to every human institution for the Lord's sake, whether it be to the king as supreme
- 14
- or to governors as sent by him for the punishment of evildoers and the approval of those who do good.
- 15
- For it is the will of God that by doing good you may silence the ignorance of foolish people.
- 16
- Be free, yet without using freedom as a pretext for evil, but as slaves of God.
- 17
- Give honor to all, love the community, fear God, honor the king.
Chapter 3
CHRISTIAN CONDUCT
- 8
- 3 Finally, all of you, be of one mind, sympathetic, loving toward one another, compassionate, humble.
- 9
- Do not return evil for evil, or insult for insult; but, on the contrary, a blessing, because to this you were called, that you might inherit a blessing.
- 10
- For: "Whoever would love life and see good days must keep the tongue from evil and the lips from speaking deceit,
- 11
- must turn from evil and do good, seek peace and follow after it.
- 12
- For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous and his ears turned to their prayer, but the face of the Lord is against evildoers."
- 13
- 4 Now who is going to harm you if you are enthusiastic for what is good?
- 14
- But even if you should suffer because of righteousness, blessed are you. Do not be afraid or terrified with fear of them,
- 15
- but sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts. Always be ready to give an explanation to anyone who asks you for a reason for your hope,
- 16
- but do it with gentleness and reverence, keeping your conscience clear, so that, when you are maligned, those who defame your good conduct in Christ may themselves be put to shame.
- 17
- For it is better to suffer for doing good, if that be the will of God, than for doing evil.
- 18
- For Christ also suffered 5 for sins once, the righteous for the sake of the unrighteous, that he might lead you to God. Put to death in the flesh, he was brought to life in the spirit.
- 19
- In it he also went to preach to the spirits in prison, 6
- 20
- who had once been disobedient while God patiently waited in the days of Noah during the building of the ark, in which a few persons, eight in all, were saved through water.
- 21
- This prefigured baptism, which saves you now. It is not a removal of dirt from the body but an appeal to God 7 for a clear conscience, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ,
- 22
- who has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God, with angels, authorities, and powers subject to him.
Chapter 4
CHRISTIAN RESTRAINT
- 1
- 1 Therefore, since Christ suffered in the flesh, arm yourselves also with the same attitude (for whoever suffers in the flesh has broken with sin),
- 2
- so as not to spend what remains of one's life in the flesh on human desires, but on the will of God.
- 3
- For the time that has passed is sufficient for doing what the Gentiles like to do: living in debauchery, evil desires, drunkenness, orgies, carousing, and wanton idolatry.
- 4
- They are surprised that you do not plunge into the same swamp of profligacy, and they vilify you;
CHRISTIAN RESTRAINT / TRIAL OF PERSECUTIONS
- 12
- 6 Beloved, do not be surprised that a trial by fire is occurring among you, as if something strange were happening to you.
- 13
- But rejoice to the extent that you share in the sufferings of Christ, so that when his glory is revealed you may also rejoice exultantly.
- 14
- If you are insulted for the name of Christ, blessed are you, for the Spirit of glory and of God rests upon you.
- 15
- But let no one among you be made to suffer as a murderer, a thief, an evildoer, or as an intriguer.
- 16
- But whoever is made to suffer as a Christian should not be ashamed but glorify God because of the name.
- 17
- For it is time for the judgment to begin with the household of God; if it begins with us, how will it end for those who fail to obey the gospel of God?
- 18
- "And if the righteous one is barely saved, where will the godless and the sinner appear?"
- 19
- As a result, those who suffer in accord with God's will hand their souls over to a faithful creator as they do good.
Chapter 4
TEMPTATION OF JESUS
- 1
- 1 Filled with the holy Spirit, 2 Jesus returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the desert
- 2
- for forty days, 3 to be tempted by the devil. He ate nothing during those days, and when they were over he was hungry.
- 3
- The devil said to him, "If you are the Son of God, command this stone to become bread."
- 4
- Jesus answered him, "It is written, 'One does not live by bread alone.'"
- 5
- Then he took him up and showed him all the kingdoms of the world in a single instant.
- 6
- The devil said to him, "I shall give to you all this power and their glory; for it has been handed over to me, and I may give it to whomever I wish.
- 7
- All this will be yours, if you worship me."
- 8
- Jesus said to him in reply, "It is written: 'You shall worship the Lord, your God, and him alone shall you serve.'"
- 9
- 4 Then he led him to Jerusalem, made him stand on the parapet of the temple, and said to him, "If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from here,
- 10
- for it is written: 'He will command his angels concerning you, to guard you,'
- 11
- and: 'With their hands they will support you, lest you dash your foot against a stone.'"
- 12
- Jesus said to him in reply, "It also says, 'You shall not put the Lord, your God, to the test.'"
Chapter 6SERMON ON THE PLAIN
- 20
- 10 11 And raising his eyes toward his disciples he said: "Blessed are you who are poor, for the kingdom of God is yours.
- 21
- Blessed are you who are now hungry, for you will be satisfied. Blessed are you who are now weeping, for you will laugh.
- 22
- Blessed are you when people hate you, and when they exclude and insult you, and denounce your name as evil on account of the Son of Man.
- 23
- Rejoice and leap for joy on that day! Behold, your reward will be great in heaven. For their ancestors treated the prophets in the same way.
- 24
- But woe to you who are rich, for you have received your consolation.
- 25
- But woe to you who are filled now, for you will be hungry. Woe to you who laugh now, for you will grieve and weep.
- 26
- Woe to you when all speak well of you, for their ancestors treated the false prophets in this way.
Chapter 12
SAYINGS AGAINST GREED
- 13
- 6 Someone in the crowd said to him, "Teacher, tell my brother to share the inheritance with me."
- 14
- He replied to him, "Friend, who appointed me as your judge and arbitrator?"
- 15
- Then he said to the crowd, "Take care to guard against all greed, for though one may be rich, one's life does not consist of possessions."
- 16
- Then he told them a parable. "There was a rich man whose land produced a bountiful harvest.
- 17
- He asked himself, 'What shall I do, for I do not have space to store my harvest?'
- 18
- And he said, 'This is what I shall do: I shall tear down my barns and build larger ones. There I shall store all my grain and other goods
- 19
- and I shall say to myself, "Now as for you, you have so many good things stored up for many years, rest, eat, drink, be merry!"
- 20
- But God said to him, 'You fool, this night your life will be demanded of you; and the things you have prepared, to whom will they belong?'
- 21
- Thus will it be for the one who stores up treasure for himself but is not rich in what matters to God." 7

Chapter 27
- 1
- Of David 1 The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom do I fear? The LORD is my life's refuge; of whom am I afraid?
- 2
- 2 When evildoers come at me to devour my flesh, These my enemies and foes themselves stumble and fall.
- 3
- Though an army encamp against me, my heart does not fear; Though war be waged against me, even then do I trust.
- 4
Chapter 28
- 6
- 2 Blessed be the LORD, who has heard the sound of my pleading.
- 7
- The LORD is my strength and my shield, in whom my heart trusted and found help. So my heart rejoices; with my song I praise my God.
- 8
- 3 LORD, you are the strength of your people, the saving refuge of your anointed king.
- 9
- Save your people, bless your inheritance; feed and sustain them forever!
Chapter 29
- 3
- 3 The voice of the LORD is over the waters; the God of glory thunders, the LORD, over the mighty waters.
- 4
- The voice of the LORD is power; the voice of the LORD is splendor.
- 5
- The voice of the LORD cracks the cedars; the LORD splinters the cedars of Lebanon,
- 6
- 4 Makes Lebanon leap like a calf, and Sirion like a young bull.
- 7
- The voice of the LORD strikes with fiery flame;
- 8
- 5 the voice of the LORD rocks the desert; the LORD rocks the desert of Kadesh.
- 9
- 6 The voice of the LORD twists the oaks and strips the forests bare. All in his palace say, "Glory!"
FOR OUR SPIRITUAL BELIEF IN LIFE

EFESO 4:17-18 5:15-17
