Bad weather disrupts ‘walk for climate’

MANILA, Sept. 19, 2014— A Church-led walk against the effects of climate change was brought to a halt by heavy rains from tropical storm “Mario” and the southwest monsoon.
The “Walk for Climate” was set to take place after a Mass at the Manila Cathedral on Friday morning but the bad weather forced organizers to cancel the activity.

Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle himself was supposed to lead the march around Manila but they have to cancel it for the safety of the participants.

“This march can still be held in other days anyway,” Tagle said.

The suspension of classes also affected the target of number of students that showed up for the event as the heavy rains inundated several parts of Metro Manila and nearby provinces.

“Is this coincidental or providential that as we pray to the Lord in praise of God’s creation and as we deepen our sense of Christian and human responsibility for the proper care of creation especially in the context of climate change, we are experiencing now its effects,” Tagle said.

The walk for climate highlights the “Season of Creation” campaign of the ecclesiastical province of Manila to call for urgent action against climate change.

In his homily, Tagle said that one expression of such Christian mission is the proper care of creation.

“Jesus continues to call men and women to be part of His life and His mission,” he said.
From warmer weather and heavier downpours to more frequent flooding and drought as “the new normal”, climate change is already having a broad impact on the nation.
As stewards of creation, the cardinal stressed the need for more disaster prevention and mitigation coupled with “conversion of mindsets and lifestyle”.

“It’s not right that we just complain from the effects of climate change. We need to claim the responsibility on how not to worsen climate change caused by human activity,” Tagle said. (CBCPNews)
