Rain worsens situation of displaced quake victims
TENT
CITY. Over 500 families are living in tents in Brgy. Lake Danao, Ormoc
City after a devastating earthquake shook Leyte province left over a
thousand houses damaged. CARITAS PALO
MANILA— Caritas Palo said that it is “extremely concerned” for the
many families made homeless by last week’s earthquake as intermittent
showers bring more misery to the victims.
Fr. Al Cris Badana, Caritas Palo director, said the rain, especially at night, is worsening the conditions of the victims, especially those living in “tent cities” and makeshift shelters.
Along with relief goods and hygiene kits, he said they’ve already distributed blankets to various affected villages but more people are asking for assistance including flashlights, among others.
“That’s the problem especially for those families with infants because they are exposed to cold temperatures,” Badana said. “So they’re really in difficult situation.”
The archdiocese has started its relief operations on Sunday and assisted thousands of families in worst-hit areas of Ormoc City and Kananga town.
Badana said many communities are also in need of medical assistance with some people requesting for basic medicines for fever and cold.
A week after the devastating 6.5 magnitude earthquake that hit Leyte, Caritas said additional assistance are needed to provide more food aid and shelter repair materials for those left homeless.
At least two people died in the disaster and many remain homeless.
The priest added that psycho-social interventions are also needed for the victims, especially the children.
“So for medical professionals who want to do medical missions, this would be very helpful also,” he said. CBCPNews
