Various Church groups march to Luneta Park to commemorate the
46th anniversary of the declaration of martial law, Sept. 21, 2018.
Church groups marked a day for “dignity and peace” to
demonstrate their opposition against the Duterte administration’s
“creeping dictatorship”.
Joined by students and activists, they took to the streets on Friday as people marked the 46th anniversary of Ferdinand Marcos’ declaration of martial law.
“Together, let us resist dictatorship, uphold the dignity of life, and strive for peace based on justice,” reads a joint statement signed by the Association of Major Religious Superiors in the Philippines and other groups.
The groups also criticized historical revisionism on Marcos and many Filipinos’ tendency “to ignore history.”
“We must not move on and simply forget on the basis of lies and historical revision of the Marcoses ushered in, venerated even, by the Duterte administration,” they said.
“Our faith moves us to perseveringly strive for peace based on justice. One that can be attained when the likes of the Marcoses are held accountable. One that is rendered by the healing of both present and past wounds spawned by the many structural and historical injustices in our land,” they added.
Aside from AMRSP, other signatories of the statement are the Sangguniang Laiko ng Pilipinas, the Promotion of Church Peoples Response, Religious Discernment Group, and Nicodemus.
