Caritas workers on high alert as PH braces for strong typhoon
The country’s social action workers are on high alert and preparing for stocks of emergency assistance as the Philippines braces for a strong typhoon.
Bishop Jose Colin Bagaforo, national director of Caritas Philippines, said rapid assessments are on standby to determine the scale of response needed.
He said Caritas is closely collaborating with social action centers in dioceses expected to be hit by Typhoon Rolly.
“Caritas is ready to send fund assistance if and when needed by the dioceses damaged by this,” Bagaforo told Radio Veritas.
“Almost all dioceses are now ready with their disaster plans as of yesterday’s contacts,” he said.
The Kidapawan bishop also urged residents to be on alert and follow advice from authorities.
In a pastoral letter, Archbishop Rolando Tria Tirona of Caceres has earlier urged the faithful to pray for protection and deliverance from the typhoon as it moves closer to the Bicol region.
“I enjoin you dear parish priests and religious communities to have a prayer vigil or offer a votive mass to spare our people and mother nature from further sufferings and pain,” Tirona said.
The archbishop also urged parishes to open their facilities to evacuees.
The typhoon was packing maximum sustained winds of 215 kph near the center and gusts of 265 kph as of 8am on Saturday, according to state weather bureau PAGASA.
The world’s strongest so far this year, PAGASA said the typhoon remains on track to become a super typhoon.
