Philippine bishops renew nationwide Divine Mercy consecration amid crises
The Catholic Church in the Philippines will again consecrate the nation to Jesus through the Divine Mercy devotion amid ongoing national and global crises.
The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines endorsed the initiative during a recent meeting, continuing a practice first observed nationwide last year.
Archbishop Gilbert Garcera of Lipa, CBCP president, said the renewal responds to continuing challenges, urging Catholics to turn to faith as a source of hope.
“In the face of our current national and global crises, this renewal of consecration would be a beautiful and fitting response of hope in the Lord’s Mercy,” Garcera said in a letter to dioceses.
He described the act as a “profound expression of trust” in Divine Mercy, which he called humanity’s refuge in times of uncertainty and trial.
Quoting visionary St. Faustina Kowalska’s diary, Garcera underscored the devotion’s significance, saying Christ offered His mercy as “the last hope of salvation” for mankind.
As part of the observance, the consecration prayer will replace the general intercessions in all Masses nationwide on Divine Mercy Sunday, April 12.
The CBCP is encouraging full participation from dioceses, parishes, religious communities and Catholic institutions in what it described as a significant spiritual initiative.
“Together, let us entrust ourselves, our Church, and our nation to the boundless mercy of God, confident that in His mercy we will find the healing, renewal, and hope we so deeply need,” Garcera said.
In 2025, the Philippines became the first country to consecrate itself to the Divine Mercy, according to EWTN News, one of the largest Catholic media organizations in the world.
It reported that bishops in Africa consecrated the continent during a Pan-African Congress on Divine Mercy Sunday in Rwanda, but the Philippines was the first single nation to do so.
