Chapter 11
THE RISING OF LAZARUS
JESUS IS LIFE AND ETERNITY
- 17
- When Jesus arrived, he found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb for four days.
- 18
- Now Bethany was near Jerusalem, only about two miles 5 away.
- 19
- And many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary to comfort them about their brother.
- 20
- When Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went to meet him; but Mary sat at home.
- 21
- Martha said to Jesus, "Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.
- 22
- (But) even now I know that whatever you ask of God, God will give you."
- 23
- Jesus said to her, "Your brother will rise."
- 24
- Martha said to him, "I know he will rise, in the resurrection on the last day."
- 25
- Jesus told her, "I am the resurrection and the life; whoever believes in me, even if he dies, will live,
- 26
- and everyone who lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?"
- 27
- 6 She said to him, "Yes, Lord. I have come to believe that you are the Messiah, the Son of God, the one who is coming into the world."
Chapter 20
- 38
- and he is not God of the dead, but of the living, for to him all are alive."
- 39
- Some of the scribes said in reply, "Teacher, you have answered well."
- 40
- And they no longer dared to ask him anything.
Chapter 7
- 8
- 6 Now to the unmarried and to widows, I say: it is a good thing for them to remain as they are, as I do,
- 9
- but if they cannot exercise self-control they should marry, for it is better to marry than to be on fire.
- 10
- To the married, however, I give this instruction (not I, but the Lord): 7 a wife should not separate from her husband
- 11
- --and if she does separate she must either remain single or become reconciled to her husband--and a husband should not divorce his wife.
- 25
- Now in regard to virgins, I have no commandment from the Lord, 11 but I give my opinion as one who by the Lord's mercy is trustworthy.
- 26
- So this is what I think best because of the present distress: that it is a good thing for a person to remain as he is.
- 27
- Are you bound to a wife? Do not seek a separation. Are you free of a wife? Then do not look for a wife.
- 28
- If you marry, however, you do not sin, nor does an unmarried woman sin if she marries; but such people will experience affliction in their earthly life, and I would like to spare you that.
- 29
- 12 I tell you, brothers, the time is running out. From now on, let those having wives act as not having them,
- 30
- those weeping as not weeping, those rejoicing as not rejoicing, those buying as not owning,
- 31
- those using the world as not using it fully. For the world in its present form is passing away.
- 32
- I should like you to be free of anxieties. An unmarried man is anxious about the things of the Lord, how he may please the Lord.
- 33
- But a married man is anxious about the things of the world, how he may please his wife,
- 34
- and he is divided. An unmarried woman or a virgin is anxious about the things of the Lord, so that she may be holy in both body and spirit. A married woman, on the other hand, is anxious about the things of the world, how she may please her husband.
- 35
- I am telling you this for your own benefit, not to impose a restraint upon you, but for the sake of propriety and adherence to the Lord without distraction.
- 36
- 13 14 If anyone thinks he is behaving improperly toward his virgin, and if a critical moment has come and so it has to be, let him do as he wishes. He is committing no sin; let them get married.
- 37
- The one who stands firm in his resolve, however, who is not under compulsion but has power over his own will, and has made up his mind to keep his virgin, will be doing well.
- 38
- So then, the one who marries his virgin does well; the one who does not marry her will do better.
- 39
- 15 A wife is bound to her husband as long as he lives. But if her husband dies, she is free to be married to whomever she wishes, provided that it be in the Lord.
- 40
- She is more blessed, though, in my opinion, if she remains as she is, and I think that I too have the Spirit of God.
Chapter 12
- 1
- 1 About that time King Herod laid hands upon some members of the church to harm them.
- 2
- He had James, the brother of John, 2 killed by the sword,
- 3
- 3 and when he saw that this was pleasing to the Jews he proceeded to arrest Peter also. (It was (the) feast of Unleavened Bread.)
- 4
- He had him taken into custody and put in prison under the guard of four squads of four soldiers each. He intended to bring him before the people after Passover.
- 5
- Peter thus was being kept in prison, but prayer by the church was fervently being made to God on his behalf.
- 6
- On the very night before Herod was to bring him to trial, Peter, secured by double chains, was sleeping between two soldiers, while outside the door guards kept watch on the prison.
- 7
- Suddenly the angel of the Lord stood by him and a light shone in the cell. He tapped Peter on the side and awakened him, saying, "Get up quickly." The chains fell from his wrists.
- 8
- The angel said to him, "Put on your belt and your sandals." He did so. Then he said to him, "Put on your cloak and follow me."
- 9
- So he followed him out, not realizing that what was happening through the angel was real; he thought he was seeing a vision.
- 10
- They passed the first guard, then the second, and came to the iron gate leading out to the city, which opened for them by itself. They emerged and made their way down an alley, and suddenly the angel left him.
- 11
- Then Peter recovered his senses and said, "Now I know for certain that (the) Lord sent his angel and rescued me from the hand of Herod and from all that the Jewish people had been expecting."
- 12
- When he realized this, he went to the house of Mary, the mother of John who is called Mark, where there were many people gathered in prayer.
- 13
- When he knocked on the gateway door, a maid named Rhoda came to answer it.
- 14
- She was so overjoyed when she recognized Peter's voice that, instead of opening the gate, she ran in and announced that Peter was standing at the gate.
- 15
- They told her, "You are out of your mind," but she insisted that it was so. But they kept saying, "It is his angel."
- 16
- But Peter continued to knock, and when they opened it, they saw him and were astounded.
- 17
- He motioned to them with his hand to be quiet and explained (to them) how the Lord had led him out of the prison, and said, "Report this to James 4 and the brothers." Then he left and went to another place.
- 18
- At daybreak there was no small commotion among the soldiers over what had become of Peter.
- 19
- Herod, after instituting a search but not finding him, ordered the guards tried and executed. Then he left Judea to spend some time in Caesarea.
Chapter 11
- 1
- 1 I ask, then, has God rejected his people? Of course not! For I too am an Israelite, a descendant of Abraham, of the tribe of Benjamin.
- 2
- God has not rejected his people whom he foreknew. Do you not know what the scripture says about Elijah, how he pleads with God against Israel?
- 3
- "Lord, they have killed your prophets, they have torn down your altars, and I alone am left, and they are seeking my life."
- 4
- But what is God's response to him? "I have left for myself seven thousand men who have not knelt to Baal."
- 5
- So also at the present time there is a remnant, chosen by grace.
- 6
- But if by grace, it is no longer because of works; otherwise grace would no longer be grace.
THE WISDOM BOOKS AND EVANGELIZATIONS
Chapter 119
- 1
- 1 Happy those whose way is blameless, who walk by the teaching of the LORD.
- 2
- Happy those who observe God's decrees, who seek the LORD with all their heart.
- 3
- They do no wrong; they walk in God's ways.
- 4
- You have given them the command to keep your precepts with care.
- 5
- May my ways be firm in the observance of your laws!
- 6
- Then I will not be ashamed to ponder all your commands.
- 7
- I will praise you with sincere heart as I study your just edicts.
- 8
- I will keep your laws; do not leave me all alone.
Chapter 40
PRAYER FOR HELP
- 5
- Happy those whose trust is the LORD, who turn not to idolatry or to those who stray after falsehood.
- 6
- How numerous, O LORD, my God, you have made your wondrous deeds! And in your plans for us there is none to equal you. Should I wish to declare or tell them, too many are they to recount.
FOR OUR SPIRITUAL BELIEF IN LIFE

EFESO 4:17-18 5:15-17
