In his homily marking the feast day of St. Joseph the Worker on May
1, Tagle urged the laity to live holy and heroically, noting that these
two characteristics are just one and the same, as far as faith and
religiosity are concerned.
“The call for us is to combine these two for they are one and the same. A real hero is one who is holy, in the same way that true holiness is manifested by one’s heroism,” he added.
Will of God
The cardinal noted that both holiness and heroism are rooted in one’s willingness to follow the will of the Lord, adding that “it is neither their own will nor their personal wants and desires that people should seek first.”
“If we would prioritize ourselves first before the will of the Lord, that is not holiness but selfishness. That is also not heroism because what heroes do is to offer themselves to others,” he said.
“There is no saint or hero that is full of oneself. To be truly holy and heroic like Jesus Christ and the saints, our focus should not be on ourselves but on the Lord,” Tagle added.
Solidarity with others
Tagle said that people also become holy and heroic through their ability to be one with others, especially those who are poor, weak, and sinful.
He noted that this was manifested by Christ who, despite being the Son of God, humbled himself and became one with His people.
“That is one true mark of holiness and heroism—embracing one’s brothers and sisters just like how Christ and all the saints did,” Tagle said.
Being able to understand the plight of others is needed for one to be in solidarity with those who are less fortunate, he noted.
“No person is alone in his journey, for Christ is always with us. He knows what we are going through and this is also the reason why those who really manifest genuine holiness and heroism would never be unsympathetic to their neighbors,” Tagle said. (Jennifer M. Orillaza)
MANILA, May 9, 2014— An anti-gambling crusader does not welcome
the rumored appointment of former Cavite congressman Ayong Maliksi as
head of a state-run lottery, but he wasn’t surprised.
Retired Archbishop Oscar Cruz said it’s sad that someone linked to jueteng, an illegal numbers game, is being considered as chair of the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office.
“I think he is a suspect in jueteng payolas…There are suspicions that are not too consoling, as far as he is concerned,” Cruz said.
Unconfirmed reports said that Maliksi, a member of the Liberal Party, is likely to be the replacement of resigned PCSO chief Margarita Juico.
The founder of the Krusadang Bayan Laban sa Jueteng said this is not surprising though, since the Aquino administration is not a known hater of the multi-million underground lottery.
“What is ‘nice’ with this administration is that jueteng is de facto legal,” Cruz said.
“When the president was asked before why doesn’t he stop jueteng, he said it is not his priority — and it remains so until now,” he added.
On Friday, Malacañang announced the resignation of Juico as PCSO chair, citing family reasons as what prompted her to quit her post.
Juico yesterday resigned from the PCSO, saying she wants to spend more time with her family.
Maliksi is reportedly set to replace Juico, but has to wait for the expiration of the one-year ban on appointments for those that ran and lost in the May 2013 polls.

to strengthen their faith in the Divine by following the footsteps of
the holy men and women of the church while being in “solidarity with the
weak and the sinful.”
