MANILA, June 6, 2015— With Pope Francis’ recent visits to Korea, Sri Lanka, and the Philippines training a spotlight on Asia, the pontiff has reiterated that he sees hope for the Church in the region

For a church trying to function in a modern, global society, the Pope
said that “with its enthusiasm, suffering and with its many martyrs,
there is a future for the Church in Asia.”The pontiff relayed this message to Manila Archbishop Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle when they met over lunch at Vatican’s guesthouse, the Domus Sancta Marthae, last week.
Pope Francis made the same statement when he visited Sri Lanka and the Philippines in January and was wowed by Filipinos’ enthusiasm.
Tagle said what the Pope said in Manila “was not just flattery” but “has already become a conviction for him.”
The cardinal, however, said that with the pope’s statement comes a “deep sense of responsibility for the great Asian continent”.
“Yes, there’s a future for us here and for the church here. Let us face the future with hope,” Tagle said. (Roy Lagarde/CBCPNews)
