Chapter 12
- 1
- 1 Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us rid ourselves of every burden and sin that clings to us 2 and persevere in running the race that lies before us
- 2
- while keeping our eyes fixed on Jesus, the leader and perfecter of faith. For the sake of the joy that lay before him he endured the cross, despising its shame, and has taken his seat at the right of the throne of God.
- 3
- Consider how he endured such opposition from sinners, in order that you may not grow weary and lose heart.
- 4
- In your struggle against sin you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding blood.
- 5
- You have also forgotten the exhortation addressed to you as sons: "My son, do not disdain the discipline of the Lord or lose heart when reproved by him;
- 6
- for whom the Lord loves, he disciplines; he scourges every son he acknowledges."
- 7
- Endure your trials as "discipline"; God treats you as sons. For what "son" is there whom his father does not discipline?
- 8
- If you are without discipline, in which all have shared, you are not sons but bastards.
- 9
- Besides this, we have had our earthly fathers to discipline us, and we respected them. Should we not (then) submit all the more to the Father of spirits and live?
- 10
- They disciplined us for a short time as seemed right to them, but he does so for our benefit, in order that we may share his holiness.
- 11
- At the time, all discipline seems a cause not for joy but for pain, yet later it brings the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who are trained by it.
- 12
- So strengthen your drooping hands and your weak knees.
- 13
- Make straight paths for your feet, that what is lame may not be dislocated but healed.
- 14
- Strive for peace with everyone, and for that holiness without which no one will see the Lord.
- 15
- 3 See to it that no one be deprived of the grace of God, that no bitter root spring up and cause trouble, through which many may become defiled,
- 16
- that no one be an immoral or profane person like Esau, who sold his birthright for a single meal.
- 17
- For you know that later, when he wanted to inherit his father's blessing, he was rejected because he found no opportunity to change his mind, even though he sought the blessing with tears.
- 18
- 4 You have not approached that which could be touched 5 and a blazing fire and gloomy darkness and storm
- 19
- and a trumpet blast and a voice speaking words such that those who heard begged that no message be further addressed to them,
- 20
- for they could not bear to hear the command: "If even an animal touches the mountain, it shall be stoned."
- 21
- Indeed, so fearful was the spectacle that Moses said, "I am terrified and trembling."
- 22
- No, you have approached Mount Zion and the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and countless angels in festal gathering,
- 23
- and the assembly of the firstborn enrolled in heaven, 6 and God the judge of all, and the spirits of the just made perfect,
- 24
- and Jesus, the mediator of a new covenant, and the sprinkled blood that speaks more eloquently 7 than that of Abel.
- 25
- See that you do not reject the one who speaks. For if they did not escape when they refused the one who warned them on earth, how much more in our case if we turn away from the one who warns from heaven.
- 26
- His voice shook the earth at that time, but now he has promised, "I will once more shake not only earth but heaven."
- 27
- That phrase, "once more," points to (the) removal of shaken, created things, so that what is unshaken may remain.
- 28
- Therefore, we who are receiving the unshakable kingdom should have gratitude, with which we should offer worship pleasing to God in reverence and awe.
- 29
- For our God is a consuming fire.
Chapter 3
TRUE WISDOM
- 13
- 2 Who among you is wise and understanding? Let him show his works by a good life in the humility that comes from wisdom.
- 14
- But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast and be false to the truth.
- 15
- Wisdom of this kind does not come down from above but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic.
- 16
- For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there is disorder and every foul practice.
- 17
- But the wisdom from above is first of all pure, then peaceable, gentle, compliant, full of mercy and good fruits, without inconstancy or insincerity.
- 18
- And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace for those who cultivate peace.
Chapter 8
- 39
- 19 They answered and said to him, "Our father is Abraham." Jesus said to them, "If you were Abraham's children, you would be doing the works of Abraham.
- 40
- But now you are trying to kill me, a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God; Abraham did not do this.
- 41
- You are doing the works of your father!" (So) they said to him, "We are not illegitimate. We have one Father, God."
- 42
- Jesus said to them, "If God were your Father, you would love me, for I came from God and am here; I did not come on my own, but he sent me.
- 43
- Why do you not understand what I am saying? Because you cannot bear to hear my word.
- 44
- You belong to your father the devil and you willingly carry out your father's desires. He was a murderer from the beginning and does not stand in truth, because there is no truth in him. When he tells a lie, he speaks in character, because he is a liar and the father of lies.
- 45
- But because I speak the truth, you do not believe me.
- 46
- Can any of you charge me with sin? If I am telling the truth, why do you not believe me?
- 47
- Whoever belongs to God hears the words of God; for this reason you do not listen, because you do not belong to God."
Chapter 8
- 48
- The Jews answered and said to him, "Are we not right in saying that you are a Samaritan 20 and are possessed?"
- 49
- Jesus answered, "I am not possessed; I honor my Father, but you dishonor me.
- 50
- I do not seek my own glory; there is one who seeks it and he is the one who judges.
- 51
- Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever keeps my word will never see death."
- 52
- (So) the Jews said to him, "Now we are sure that you are possessed. Abraham died, as did the prophets, yet you say, 'Whoever keeps my word will never taste death.'
- 53
- Are you greater than our father Abraham, 21 who died? Or the prophets, who died? Who do you make yourself out to be?"
- 54
- Jesus answered, "If I glorify myself, my glory is worth nothing; but it is my Father who glorifies me, of whom you say, 'He is our God.'
- 55
- You do not know him, but I know him. And if I should say that I do not know him, I would be like you a liar. But I do know him and I keep his word.
- 56
- Abraham your father rejoiced to see my day; he saw it 22 and was glad.
- 57
- So the Jews said to him, "You are not yet fifty years old and you have seen Abraham?" 23
- 58
- 24 Jesus said to them, "Amen, amen, I say to you, before Abraham came to be, I AM."
- 59
- So they picked up stones to throw at him; but Jesus hid and went out of the temple area.
Chapter 3
- 1
- 1 What advantage is there then in being a Jew? Or what is the value of circumcision?
- 2
- Much, in every respect. (For) in the first place, they were entrusted with the utterances of God.
- 3
- What if some were unfaithful? Will their infidelity nullify the fidelity of God?
- 4
- Of course not! God must be true, though every human being is a liar, 2 as it is written: "That you may be justified in your words, and conquer when you are judged."
- 5
- But if our wickedness provides proof of God's righteousness, what can we say? Is God unjust, humanly speaking, to inflict his wrath?
- 6
- Of course not! For how else is God to judge the world?
- 7
- But if God's truth redounds to his glory through my falsehood, why am I still being condemned as a sinner?
- 8
- And why not say--as we are accused and as some claim we say--that we should do evil that good may come of it? Their penalty is what they deserve.
Chapter 3
- 9
- 3 Well, then, are we better off? Not entirely, for we have already brought the charge against Jews and Greeks alike that they are all under the domination of sin,
- 10
- as it is written: "There is no one just, not one,
- 11
- there is no one who understands, there is no one who seeks God.
- 12
- All have gone astray; all alike are worthless; there is not one who does good, (there is not) even one.
- 13
- Their throats are open graves; they deceive with their tongues; the venom of asps is on their lips;
- 14
- their mouths are full of bitter cursing.
- 15
- Their feet are quick to shed blood;
- 16
- ruin and misery are in their ways,
- 17
- and the way of peace they know not.
- 18
- There is no fear of God before their eyes."
- 19
- Now we know that what the law 4 says is addressed to those under the law, so that every mouth may be silenced and the whole world stand accountable to God,
- 20
- since no human being will be justified in his sight 5 by observing the law; for through the law comes consciousness of sin.

EFESO 4:17-18 5:15-17 HEBREWS 4"7
