Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle said that justice and generosity are essential to discipleship and stressed that “neither will work without the other”.

At a Mass Wednesday at Radio Veritas, he stressed justice without kindness is an empty gesture.

“We will only keep computing our deeds,” Tagle said in his homily. “Furthermore, if there is only generosity without justice, people will forget the concept of justice.”

“For God, justice and benevolence should not be in conflict,” he added. “For God, everyone, whether they’re ahead or behind, has a role to play. Justice and generosity prevails.”

The prefect of the Vatican’s Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples is in the country for a vacation.

Tagle on Aug. 5 also met with Cardinal Jose Advincula for the first time after his successor was formally installed as archbishop of Manila in June.

Advincula said he learned a lot from his predecessor who served the archdiocese for nine years.

Almost two months into his term, Advincula admitted that he still has a lot to learn particularly about the situation of the 442-year-old archdiocese.

“We had a long meeting and I learned a lot from this conversation,” he said.
