John
Chapter 8:12-20
The Light of the World

12Jesus spoke to them again, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

13So the Pharisees said to him, “You testify on your own behalf, so your testimony cannot be verified.”

14Jesus answered and said to them, “Even if I do testify on my own behalf, my testimony can be verified, because I know where I came from and where I am going. But you do not know where I come from or where I am going.

15You judge by appearances, but I do not judge anyone.

16And even if I should judge, my judgment is valid, because I am not alone, but it is I and the Father who sent me.

17Even in your law it is written that the testimony of two men can be verified.

18I testify on my behalf and so does the Father who sent me.”

19So they said to him, “Where is your father?” Jesus answered, “You know neither me nor my Father. If you knew me, you would know my Father also.”

20He spoke these words while teaching in the treasury in the temple area. But no one arrested him, because his hour had not yet come.

John
Chapter 11:1-44
The Raising of Lazarus

1Now a man was ill, Lazarus from Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha.

2Mary was the one who had anointed the Lord with perfumed oil and dried his feet with her hair; it was her brother Lazarus who was ill.

3So the sisters sent word to him, saying, “Master, the one you love is ill.

4When Jesus heard this he said, “This illness is not to end in death, but is for the glory of God, that the Son of God may be glorified through it.”

5Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus.

6So when he heard that he was ill, he remained for two days in the place where he was.

7Then after this he said to his disciples, “Let us go back to Judea.”

8The disciples said to him, “Rabbi, the Jews were just trying to stone you, and you want to go back there?”

9Jesus answered, “Are there not twelve hours in a day? If one walks during the day, he does not stumble, because he sees the light of this world.

10But if one walks at night, he stumbles, because the light is not in him.”

11He said this, and then told them, “Our friend Lazarus is asleep, but I am going to awaken him.”

12So the disciples said to him, “Master, if he is asleep, he will be saved.”

13But Jesus was talking about his death, while they thought that he meant ordinary sleep.

14So then Jesus said to them clearly, “Lazarus has died.

15And I am glad for you that I was not there, that you may believe. Let us go to him.”

16So Thomas, called Didymus, said to his fellow disciples, “Let us also go to die with him.”

17When Jesus arrived, he found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb for four days.

18Now Bethany was near Jerusalem, only about two miles away.

19And many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary to comfort them about their brother.

20When Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went to meet him; but Mary sat at home.

21Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.

22[But] even now I know that whatever you ask of God, God will give you.”

23Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise.”

24Martha said to him, “I know he will rise, in the resurrection on the last day.”

25Jesus told her, “I am the resurrection and the life; whoever believes in me, even if he dies, will live,

26and everyone who lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?”

27 She said to him, “Yes, Lord. I have come to believe that you are the Messiah, the Son of God, the one who is coming into the world.”

28When she had said this, she went and called her sister Mary secretly, saying, “The teacher is here and is asking for you.”

29As soon as she heard this, she rose quickly and went to him.

30For Jesus had not yet come into the village, but was still where Martha had met him.

31So when the Jews who were with her in the house comforting her saw Mary get up quickly and go out, they followed her, presuming that she was going to the tomb to weep there.

32When Mary came to where Jesus was and saw him, she fell at his feet and said to him, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.”

33When Jesus saw her weeping and the Jews who had come with her weeping, he became perturbed and deeply troubled,

34and said, “Where have you laid him?” They said to him, “Sir, come and see.”

35And Jesus wept.

36So the Jews said, “See how he loved him.”

37But some of them said, “Could not the one who opened the eyes of the blind man have done something so that this man would not have died?”

38So Jesus, perturbed again, came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone lay across it.

39Jesus said, “Take away the stone.” Martha, the dead man’s sister, said to him, “Lord, by now there will be a stench; he has been dead for four days.”

40Jesus said to her, “Did I not tell you that if you believe you will see the glory of God?”

41So they took away the stone. And Jesus raised his eyes and said, “Father, I thank you for hearing me.

42I know that you always hear me; but because of the crowd here I have said this, that they may believe that you sent me.”

43And when he had said this, he cried out in a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!”

44The dead man came out, tied hand and foot with burial bands, and his face was wrapped in a cloth. So Jesus said to them, “Untie him and let him go.

Romans
Chapter 3:21-31
Justification apart from the Law

21But now the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from the law, though testified to by the law and the prophets,

22the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction;

23all have sinned and are deprived of the glory of God.

24They are justified freely by his grace through the redemption in Christ Jesus,

25whom God set forth as an expiation, through faith, by his blood, to prove his righteousness because of the forgiveness of sins previously committed,

26through the forbearance of God—to prove his righteousness in the present time, that he might be righteous and justify the one who has faith in Jesus.

27 What occasion is there then for boasting? It is ruled out. On what principle, that of works? No, rather on the principle of faith.

28For we consider that a person is justified by faith apart from works of the law.

29Does God belong to Jews alone? Does he not belong to Gentiles, too? Yes, also to Gentiles,

30for God is one and will justify the circumcised on the basis of faith and the uncircumcised through faith.

31Are we then annulling the law by this faith? Of course not! On the contrary, we are supporting the law.

Romans
Chapter 8:28-39
God’s Indomitable Love in Christ

28 We know that all things work for good for those who love God,* who are called according to his purpose.

29 For those he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, so that he might be the firstborn among many brothers.

30And those he predestined he also called; and those he called he also justified; and those he justified he also glorified.

31 What then shall we say to this? If God is for us, who can be against us?

32He who did not spare his own Son but handed him over for us all, how will he not also give us everything else along with him?

33Who will bring a charge against God’s chosen ones? It is God who acquits us.

34Who will condemn? It is Christ [Jesus] who died, rather, was raised, who also is at the right hand of God, who indeed intercedes for us.

35What will separate us from the love of Christ? Will anguish, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or the sword?

36As it is written:
“For your sake we are being slain all the day;
we are looked upon as sheep to be slaughtered.”

37No, in all these things we conquer overwhelmingly through him who loved us.

38For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor present things, nor future things, nor powers,

39nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Romans
Chapter 9:6-24
God’s Free Choice

6But it is not that the word of God has failed. For not all who are of Israel are Israel,

7nor are they all children of Abraham because they are his descendants; but “It is through Isaac that descendants shall bear your name.”

8This means that it is not the children of the flesh who are the children of God, but the children of the promise are counted as descendants.

9For this is the wording of the promise, “About this time I shall return and Sarah will have a son.”

10And not only that, but also when Rebecca had conceived children by one husband, our father Isaac*—

11before they had yet been born or had done anything, good or bad, in order that God’s elective plan might continue,

12not by works but by his call—she was told, “The older shall serve the younger.”

13As it is written:
“I loved Jacob
but hated Esau.”

14 What then are we to say? Is there injustice on the part of God? Of course not!l 15For he says to Moses:
“I will show mercy to whom I will,
I will take pity on whom I will.”

16So it depends not upon a person’s will or exertion, but upon God, who shows mercy.

17For the scripture says to Pharaoh, “This is why I have raised you up, to show my power through you that my name may be proclaimed throughout the earth.”

18Consequently, he has mercy upon whom he wills, and he hardens whom he wills.

19 You will say to me then, “Why (then) does he still find fault? For who can oppose his will?”

20But who indeed are you, a human being, to talk back to God? Will what is made say to its maker, “Why have you created me so?”

21Or does not the potter have a right over the clay, to make out of the same lump one vessel for a noble purpose and another for an ignoble one?

22What if God, wishing to show his wrath and make known his power, has endured with much patience the vessels of wrath made for destruction?

23This was to make known the riches of his glory to the vessels of mercy, which he has prepared previously for glory,

24namely, us whom he has called, not only from the Jews but also from the Gentiles.

Ephesians
Chapter 3:14-21
Prayer for the Readers

14For this reason I kneel before the Father,

15from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named,

16that he may grant you in accord with the riches of his glory to be strengthened with power through his Spirit in the inner self,

17and that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; that you, rooted and grounded in love,

18may have strength to comprehend with all the holy ones what is the breadth and length and height and depth,

19and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, so that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.

20Now to him who is able to accomplish far more than all we ask or imagine, by the power at work within us,

21to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen.

Ephesians
Chapter 4:1-6
Unity in the Body

1 I, then, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to live in a manner worthy of the call you have received,

2with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another through love,

3striving to preserve the unity of the spirit through the bond of peace:

4 one body and one Spirit, as you were also called to the one hope of your call;

5one Lord, one faith, one baptism;

6one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.

Galatians
Chapter 5:13-26
Freedom for Service

13For you were called for freedom, brothers. But do not use this freedom as an opportunity for the flesh; rather, serve* one another through love.

14For the whole law is fulfilled in one statement, namely, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”

15But if you go on biting and devouring one another, beware that you are not consumed by one another.
16l I say, then: live by the Spirit and you will certainly not gratify the desire of the flesh.

17For the flesh has desires against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; these are opposed to each other, so that you may not do what you want.

18But if you are guided by the Spirit, you are not under the law.

19 Now the works of the flesh are obvious: immorality, impurity, licentiousness,

20idolatry, sorcery, hatreds, rivalry, jealousy, outbursts of fury, acts of selfishness, dissensions, factions,

21occasions of envy,* drinking bouts, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.

22In contrast, the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness,
23gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law.

24Now those who belong to Christ [Jesus] have crucified their flesh with its passions and desires.

25If we live in the Spirit, let us also follow the Spirit.

26Let us not be conceited, provoking one another, envious of one another.

Remission of Sin

aOf David. A maskil.

I

Blessed is the one whose fault is removed,
whose sin is forgiven.

2Blessed is the man to whom the LORD imputes no guilt,
in whose spirit is no deceit.

10Many are the sorrows of the wicked one,
but mercy surrounds the one who trusts in the LORD.

11Be glad in the LORD and rejoice, you righteous;
exult, all you upright of heart.e

EFESO 4:17-18  5:15-17 HEBREWS 4"7
