Catholics urged: ‘Speak up about social issues online’

Manila Auxilliary Bishop Broderick Pabillo urged Catholics to be socially responsible by speaking up online about issues of national significance.

At the closing of the Sangguniang Laiko ng Pilipinas Lay Leaders’ Caucus on Feb. 10, the bishop in-charge of Laiko encouraged those present to learn more about the topics discussed, namely, human rights, the Constitution, federalism and charter change, and to use social media to spread their thoughts and opinions. The “cyber highway,” he said, magnifies the message.

He specifically mentioned using cellphones and gadgets so that by simply texting and posting on social media sites, they can already let other people know their stand.

In addition, the prelate enjoined them to use parish or community meetings as venues for discussion and for spreading information.

Pabillo said “the Filipino makes sense” once he is educated about current issues. The problem is that many Filipinos are not informed, he said, or if they are informed, they think “they are alone.”

He also asked the audience to visit the Laiko website and its Facebook page where they can post their personal one-liners on social issues.

Information materials on charter change and federalism are available on the Laiko website for members to use in parish or community study groups. (Marylee San Buenaventura/CBCPNews)
